    Terry_42 & Chuck Van Eekelen,

Thank you for your quick responses and great advice.

Chuck, you raised a good point. If I do indeed make it outside of my four walls and do some house parties etc it would be good to take the speakers with me as part of a small setup. I use the word monitors as that seems to be the correct terminology but it seems I want some decent active portables speakers for bedroom use and possibly (fingers crossed :)) playing out. I’ll investigate the Numark speakers some more.

Thanks again to both of you for your help and advice.

Oh I’m also looking at the m Audio BX5’s any views on these for dual purpose?

I got an email about this last night.
Am i being thick but what is the purpose of this software? The setup page shows (for example) a controller connecting to a laptop and then a tablet attached to the laptop. It says that you need Serato DJ to use Remote. Why take a laptop and a tablet out with you? I’m sure i’ve missed the point somewhere. It was late when i read the info 🙂

    Showbiz Connor,
The course is great! Can’t wait for e next set of videos 🙂

Like you I’m using my left hand for the scratching and saving my stronger hand for the cross fader work.
When I tried to learn to scratch before the fader work is where I fell down. Hopefully this time I’ll succeed

    Greetinx,

Sorry if my post came across a bit heavy handed it was not intended to be so 🙂
    I agree with your advice.

I like the sound of the student feedback/interaction aspect of the course. Getting support and advice from peers will be a great help.

I agree the price may put off some (or a lot) of the DDJ readers but if this was my job or I was thinking of making a career of DJing this course would be a no brainer. The digital era has made becoming a DJ much easier. We all know the reasons why and because of this “everyone is a DJ” these days. If paying $197 is going to give you the edge over your competitors then it’s a small price to pay. It’s not just about throwing a baby scratch over a track, as Phil & Steve say, you will learn so much more.
I intend to do the course. I’m not a DJ (well haven’t been for 15 years or so) but I still love messing around and the digital controllers have reignited my passion for music and mixing.
One (tongue in cheek) request for Phil & Steve can you teach us the “Live at Union Square” set that Jazzy Jeff (my hero) does on He’s the DJ I’m the Rapper album from 1988. That’s what made me go out and buy 2xSL1210’s and a citronic mixer……ah those were the days J

Again thanks for the reply and sorry for presuming you are from this side of the pond 🙂
I’m not a sound snob at all so any thing that sounds half decent is ok.
it’ll be for bedroom mixing and as space is a premium if I can dispense of the amp and trailing wires I’ll be a happy man.
To be honest I don’t want to spend anywhere near the $250 mark but I’ll see what I can get.
    Thanks again

    Niu02kevin,

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I’ve looked into it and it seems power (active?) speakers are the way to go. I have the sound going through an old amp and some passive speakers at the moment but that takes up too much space. I better start saving up for a pair of powered speakers. Richer Sounds had some Cambridge Audio ones for about ÂŁ160. I don’t really want to pay that much but these type of speakers seem expensive. Have you any ideas on which speakers to go for? It’ll just be for bedroom mixing.

On another note the VCI 380 is a great bit of kit. I haven’t really had chance to have a good play but the pad effects for transition mixing are great. I’m just waiting for the Serato upgrade from ITCH to DJ

After a little bit of digging it seems that ITCH controllers that are due an upgrade to Serato DJ (VCI-380 being one of them) will get the new software free when it comes out.
may as well close the thread and i’m off to get a VCI-380 🙂

My favourite DJ software id Djay 4.0 and the reason why is i have a Vestax Spin and the software integrates perfectly witht he controller and my Macbook. Yes it lacks the bells and whistles of the big boys but it does the job and i can record my sets with a click of a button. I will be changing to Itch once i get my VCI-380 though 🙂

Ok, thanks for the info both of you, much appreciated. There has been a slight change in thinking, this is gonna go slightly off topic but i asked my partner if she wanted jogwheels on her soon to be purchased controller, As she has never used decks before she said it wasn’t a priority. I then showed her the Novaton Twitch and she seemed very interested after watching a youtube video. we then went to a Dj shop in Manchester and looked at the various controllers. It is down to the Mixtrack Pro with the Traktor (and paying the ÂŁ80 for the upgrade dongle thingy) or the Novaton Twitch. She is more interested in using samples etc so the Twitch seems the way to go although it will work out ÂŁ60 to ÂŁ70 more expensive. The consensus (it seems) is that Traktor is better for samples but how much better is it than Serato Itch which will be supplied with the Twitch? We don’t want to pay for a full copy of Traktor 2.5

Thanks for any advice and keep u the good work Phil.

I taught my good lady to beat mix on my Vestax Spin (with Djay) over the weekend. She really enjoyed it and wants a controller for herself. I looked into the Mixtrack Pro but what has put me off getting it for her is the inability for Serato Intro to record. I know this has been well documented but I feel it’s a massive omission. When I started out on my Technics many, many moons ago, I used to wear out TDK tapes recording over and over again perfecting my mixing and listening to how records go together etc. I think it’s a must for anyone who wants to improve there Dj’ing, beatmachting skills. This helped me to understand if songs went together and it really helped me when I played out. Also recording and listening my sets when I played out again helped me improve. My partner may never play outside her house (but hey you never know) but its still crap she can’t record her mixes and let me hear them.
It’s a shame as it would’ve been perfect for her. I thought the Djay software on my macbook was a bit basic but it seems it not. I was thinking of upgrading to a Vestax VCI-380 but the price was a bit steep. The Reloop terminal mix 2 came to my attention and I was looking forward to its release (and Phil’s review) but alas this comes with Intro too. Looks like the Vestax Spin will be keeping my hands busy for some time to come.

that’s one of the controllers i had my eye on. A bit more than i want to pay but it may be worth it.

    Thanks for all your advice.
