Participantmaybe u could post a link to one of your mixes so we could hear exactly whats going on. but in my limited experience what your looking for is maybe either better phasing techniques or the way you organize your playlist. or even a combination of the two.
wih the phasing ive found it especially energizing when u dont let songs get to the boring outro or breakdown. if u look for it youll notice every song has a point where all the energy drops or starts to fade out. usually right after 2nd chorus or shortly thereafter. depending on genre and song structure ill try to start my next songs buildup or first verse or whatever i feel fits the mood right then.
wih song selection idk your exact problem but a common problem is not playing songs in an order accordig to energy levels. alot of people just start banging away with high energy music and cant maintain that energy for their entire set. youve got to be able to navigate and direct the energy played in your sets, which surprisingly means dropping the energy from time to time.
put it this way if your playing lets say 5 star energy songs (see blog article on adjusting itunes rating system) one after the other, nothing really sets their energy levels apart from the other. in fact this usually kills the buzz and energy for the second 5* song being played and so forth. setting its energy legel down a notch or two. but if u released the tension for a song (or 2 or 3 etc…) and played some less energrtic songs, then started to build up again to your next 5 star tune? well your going to recieve a much stronger reaction as compared to just banging away 5*s all night long.
you cant have the sweer without the sour or the highs without the lows. you and your crowd need something to compare your highs and lows too.
hope that helps, send me a msg sometime if u wanna trade mixes n shoot the shit.

ParticipantMy inspiration is the music that raises the hair on my arm.
Wether it be a huge buildup into a dirty ass drop or the perfect vocals over a sweet melodic tune.
Ive noticed this works alot better too when DJ’s know how and where they want their set to go (rather than just listening to tunes one by one.) The DJ has to know when to raise the energy level, when to drop/lower it, when to sustain it, and when to blow your mind. 😀
Its like their taking you on a journey to musical heaven and you have no control where your going 😉
These mixes are few and far between, but their def out there.

Participantgood point chris. thinking about it, in order to be a sellout, dont you have to first be dominating the underground scene? excuse me if im wrong but wasnt he always a mainstream top 40 artist, even when he was only popular in europe?
seems to me like he just got really good at what he was originally doing. theres no need to hate, hes doing his thing. everybody else should do theirs as well.
one more thing, everybody can be looking at this the wrong way. guetta is almost like a gateway artist for most people to discover the world of edm. i know a ton of people who have learned about the genre through guetta and are now much deeper into the music. im pretty sure the likes of tiesto, armin or whoever have you are all appreciative of their new bigger fan bases.

Participantlol yeah after listening to it I could tell. I tried to stick within keys but eventually threw that out the window when I couldn’t figure out the right mixes or get the songs I wanted in there. the overall library is pretty limited and thats extra true for my trance library.
thanks for the criticism and giving it to me straight. you mentioned the volume control, thats been something I have been trying to teach myself but can’t really figure it out. im using virtual dj, any tips, pointers or links you give there?
thanks manhattan, thats definately the feel I was going for 😀

lmk what u guys think.
I was really inspired by vineoaks mix and liked his mix alot. so I stuck with the trance theme even though thats not really my forte.

Participantit takes him a while to figure out exactly what happened, but that look on his face when he does?

Participantnobody gonna jump on this? seems like it could be fun and a way to mix it up and get away from the norm. I may throw one in jus for the the fun of it.

Participanti tried the external hd route, while i think its a great idea to “back up” your music every so often. i just dont think its convenient enough while using your laptop everywhere you go. having everything based on one internal hard drive makes life alot easier to be honest.
but idk, interested to hear other reasons as to why to go external.

Participantwell said. I see alot of dj hating going on, especially with youtube. but honestly its just internet tough guys. most of them dont have the balls to tell that to another person to their face. i dont waste my time with internet debating, id rather spend my time actually learning something. (or doing nothing at all honestly lol)
i dont even see what the big deal is. who cares really. if your spending all this time going around looking for people to hate on, then your probably just another egotisitical dj who thinks they’re better than what they really are. no one way is better than the other imo. it all comes down to skills in the end.
stop paying attention to what other people are doing and work on bettering yourself.

fwiw i dont know of any “subscriptions”, if anything i just buy tunes off beatport or itunes

Participantbeatport.com
best place to try/buy all types of edm. can also help u to tell the difference if u play around with the different genres for a little bit.
i still dont know the exact differences (or the correct names for that matter lol), but yeah using beatport to help me sort out my library has def helped a ton.
