Actually probably the worse was playing a gig at a massive festival after party… It was my first time using an S4 (the previous DJ was using it and I told him just to leave it and I’ll play off that as opposed to the CDJs) I spent the first 20-30 mins of my set one level off on the EQs… So I was using the highs as gains, mids as highs, lows as mids and the filter as the bass (I think that all makes sense)… Now this place has a terrible sound system and I was a little bit bent so it was kind of understandable…. However having it pointed out to me by Diplo & the guys from Magnetic Man took a while to live down.
wow yeah thats pretty brutal. reading all these stories makes me not want to drink while im on the clock or about to clock in for a dj set. I just got done listening to afrojacks set from ultra music festival, and after introducing himself with his voice gone and saying how hard he partied that week, he proceeded to train wreck the first twenty minutes of his set until lil jon came in to save his ass. he couldnt even get his beatmatching down and was playing the tracks he was cueing up at full volume! lol.
im sure thats everybodys plan (to not drink on the job) but i think the peer pressure eventually gets to everybody, especially when they get comftorable with their mixing. im sure being in the drinking/clubbing atmosphere adds to the pressure as well. but ill do my best not too and keep in mind that I have a responsibility to the people and everybody involved to maintain my composure during a set.
April 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm in reply to: Is practicing your sets a lot like going to the driving range? #18190Dominic Souza-Larimore
Participanthaha, yeah alot of my friends only bust out the driver at the range and basically play a game of “whos the bigger man who can pound the ball farther”. hardly ever stopping to bring out the short irons and trying to hit the greens of the flags 100 yards away. let alone ever stopping by the practice green to chip or putt.
thats how I see how my local djs mixing skills these days. they play all the wrong songs, probably the same stuff the learned to dj with years ago with songs that are severly outdated, and they only use the crossfader to transition between songs. start to cross over to half way at around the 8 1/2 bar marker than fully crossover on the 1. Its like once they learned that transition they no longer need to use/learn any other, just keep blasting balls as far as you can
its the same thing at 90% of the places that I go too. its suprising these guys still have a job when all they do is clear dance floors.
IMO you have to be well rounded in everything the game has to offer. that goes for both golf and dj’ing. learn as much as you can and practice all your shots/transitions/mixes repeatedly. its one of those things were you can never perfect it no matter how good you get. its an evolving game and you always have to stay on the up on up about everything, progressing and keeping up with all the latest trends and techniques.

Participant2SHAE!, post: 16861, member: 1459 wrote: Funny you say that, I was doing the same thing. I never played online poker seriously, because at first it was just a hobby (like DJing) and I was always a much better live NLH/PLO player. Foxwoods was also 40 minutes from my college so it was convenient enough to take advantage of alot of the tourists that came in daily. I was grinding 60-70 hrs/week and had limited expenses since everything most of everything was comped. After I graduated I moved further north and now its hard to find a consistent game so Ive been focusing more on my DJ skills. And I gotta say, IMO DJing is much more enjoyable, and not nearly as stressful as grinding it out, day by day at the tables, in the same seat watching the sun go up and down. Now if Im lucky I get to watch the sun come up when Im in the booth.
yeah man poker is literally such a grind. after 4 years of playing online it lost that fun feeling. I stopped caring about the money and wanted nothing more than to get out of my office and into the real world. and even though im working a 9-5 bulls**t job currently, im still much happier than i typically was playing poker. thinking about it I really only enjoyed my time playing poker after i got a big score from playing mtts (multi table tournaments for those not familiar). And that wasnt very often lol.
I cant wait till I can start dj’ing semi professionally and start making money back on this hobby I really enjoy. 😀

Participantthanks for the all the helpful tips. ive been practicing dj’ing alot more rather than getting caught up in all the other distractions. ive even imitated what i would play if i were doing a live set for some of the bars/clubs out here. needless to say, the first few mixes were pretty horid lol. the scene out in honolulu is all top 40 with a splash of house, progressive, and dub. so ive been having a hard time mixing the pop top 40 stuff. but the mixes started to improve over time and im getting more confident to throw myself out there into the live scene.
but i know alot of my basic skills are not up to par yet to play live or be able to get me a gig. also the house party scene is all but non existent out here too. its a small island with an old population, every house party gets shutdown within the first hour. so house partys are kinda out of the question.
but i know some promoters in the club scene out here so I may be able to get me some starter gigs right off the bat. cant wait 🙂

Participanthey man just checked out both of your mixes, gotta say i like most of what i hear. you play alot of the same stuff that i like to play. how long you been dj’ing?
my advice would be maybe be careful a little bit more when switching between electro house and disco house (or the more mellow house genre, not sure of its exact genre title). it seemed to drop or kill the energy a bit too much, and made the mix seem a bit all over the place. like when u went from dada lifes kick out the epic motherF*cker to the next song. you built up all that energy to start it off then left me wondering where it went you know.
other than that i liked alot of the other mixes and i thought your phrasing was used very skillfully. something i have been working on alot recently.
are you using samples and effects alot or is that recorded on the tracks your playing?
check out my recent mix when you got the time

Participantso do you already own traktor pro or not?
id personally go with the vci-400. i dont own any of the controllers stated above but between the s4 and vci-400 (which imo are very similar) id go with the vci-400 because of the ample amounts of controls and buttons.
March 11, 2012 at 1:20 pm in reply to: best dj software 202, traktor vs vdj vs serato vs ___? #16548Dominic Souza-Larimore
Participantmade the switch, and while im still figuring out the mapping (palm to forehead), i think i am going to like traktor alot more. i already like how much more simpler the UI is to read. not to mention the waveforms, decks, browsers, effects etc all feel and look alot more professional. idk if thats the right word but thats the best way I can describe it.
I think with VDJ the creators of the skins get too carried away with the visual design and adding as much as possible into their window that it gets way too clustured and takes alot more time to navigate around. I was surprised at how much less work my eyes and brain have to do to find exactly what im looking for with traktor.
thx for the heads up bro

Participantthx HWJ. thats perspective enough for me to at least try to make the switch. learning the effects on vdj has been quite the hassle.
but then again having experience with multiple softwares cant be a bad thing either.
Dominic Souza-Larimore
Participantgood point hessler. theres def no one size fits all when it comes to dj software.
but i was curious because everybody else kept preaching traktor n serato, and ive only been dj’ing 3 months now so i dont really know he good from the bad. thx tho

Participantthx synthet1c. i aggree the learning curve in vdj is quite steep, esp for a noob like me it took at least a month or two to work out all the kinks. i was surprised to hear other softwares work that well right out of the box. def something to consider for me
guess i should also mention ilthe problems had with id3 tagging in vdj. after sorting thru and tagging 400+ songs, i still had to manually update the id3 tags in vdj. there are tools n tips to supposedly help this problem butnone of which i could figure out. but i also hear other softwares have the same problem. if not worse.
