Participanti like the bracelet idea, maybe you try to print your dj name & info on them, or if thats too hard attatch your card to them with a string or something.
other than that just make sure you play a banging set for the ladies. alot of rihanna, lady gaga, beyonce, adele, etc etc… all that other stuff will help, but in the end everybody will only remember you for playing an awesome set. hell if possible create a huge mashup of popular female songs, that should set you apart from the rest.
be sure to post back with an update! good luck!

Anyway congrats on your first gig, i still get the same feeling everytime I play out somewhere new. Especially since the expectations keep getting higher, but you’ll soon realize 95% of people don’t care about transitions or whatever else the dj does… just that you play the songs they want to hear lol.
also your doing it right, keep having fun! even if its a dead crowd and only a handful of people show up, HAVE FUN PLAYING MUSIC AND DJ’ING! last night i was getting kinda down on myself and dj’ing because nobody showed up to this new venue I was playing at and it was supposed to get a big turnout, so my expectations were high. but after a tsunami warning scared everybody away there were only like 20-30 people tops all night. after an hour of dj’ing in cruise control and still playing warm up songs to practically nobody, the switch flipped and I said “fuck it i might as well have fun”. I started to turn up the energy, dance a lil bit, smile and have fun. totally expecting to make an ass out of myself, but really not giving a shit about that either lol. after about 20 minutes i had people coming up on stage dancing, requesting songs, and changed the whole mood of the club into party mode, even if it was a small party! We had a blast, I met some new cool people, the bar staff was happy, people started to drink, and I think I got myself another gig in the near future =)

Participantthx for all the replies, i put those theories to use yesterday and they def made the girls happy. tho i did have 2 different guys came up to me requesting, and i quote “something more upbeat, like some reggae…”
i was already playing EDM in the 128-132 bpm range lol. it was pretty clear these guys were in the wrong place. just trying to get attention and take over control. wasn’t having it. then on top of that, while i had girls coming up to the booth requesting songs and looking like they were having fun, the other dj (my partner, his event) sees this and decides he wants some of the attention as well, then proceeds to cut in every fifteen minutes to play music completely out of genre, pretty much killing the buzz i had built up.
got a lot of compliments afterwards on my sets tho 😀

and really good job for your first mix, i gotta admit my first mix sounded pretty horrid lol. good song selection, couldnt tell any errors in your transitions, granted they were pretty straight forward cuts but they get the job done! good stuff

Participantwelcome aboard the ddjt community. made the same switch myself from vdj to traktor and love it. i also started out with a numark mixtrack but after 3 months i had already outgrew it and found it necessary to upgrade to keep progressing as a dj. so if your serious about your hobby and taking it to the next level eventually i would highly reccomend getting a more serious controller. if money is an issue i would advise the traktor s2, only 400. probably less if u buy used or refurbished. its also directly integrated with traktor so thats always a plus.
if your a boss and money dont mean shit to you, go for the s4. lol, but yeah thats bout 900. something in between would be like the numark n4 or vci 100.
dont forget to check out some of my mixes 😉

I 2nd that. Searching/downloading/tagging/prepping new tunes is a full time job in itself, and quite tedious. I hate that part of it, but its definitely worth it when your playing the latest tracks before anybody else even hears them 😎
gonna preach my podcasts again lol. itunes podcasts, hour long mixes from top name producers and djs, all of whom get exclusive tracks (usually from their labels or artists they signed) to be able to play them days/weeks/or months before their released to the general public, beatport, itunes, or any other medium. so i just keep a notepad or my phone notes handy and save the titles and artist names (all of which are tracklisted on the podcast) and save them until they have been released. kinda sucks hunting for them when their not even released and you have to wait, but at least your on top of it and will be prepared when it does come out.
also thanks everybody for listing last.fm. already found a few bangers on there and will be visiting regularly.

I think the main reason why Traktor doesn’t record in mp3 format is due to licensing fees.wasn’t complaining, just stating the facts 😉
Dominic Souza-Larimore
Participanttraktor records in .wav format. which is alot higher quality than mp3. you can convert it to aac in itunes which is compatable with most other programs. or u can convert to mp3 using some other 3rd party software. make sure u have the mix recorder set to internal to record youdr mixes using the traktor software.
vdj records directly to mp3 format. pretty convenient if u ask me. but whatever both record and do their job.
