in reply to: Help, need best music for Dress Fashion Show. #37855

Work with the show promoter, they pick the music and theme. Some want the karoake version, no words, since you have a Mc. If you havent done one, your in for an education. Look at as many youtube vids to get a fuller picture. It’s more like a play production than a dance. .Good Luck and work hard! preperation is everything (PS: if it’s their first time or they are a small shop,it probably won’t happen, they cost a lot to put on and most shop owners get in over their head on this) OH Ya —– GET PAID! do not do allllll this work for free, zero return most times.

Dj Armin van Buuren who the heck is he – if you want to be differnt, use your own cool, unique name!

Waste of time, worrying about a name, promote yourself, hone your skills, use this time to gain knowledge, get out to see whats happening in your market, make connections. Trust me, know one is going to hire Dj I’mthebestthingsinceslicedbread , but only in this case they will remember your name.

It will turn around when Hollwood comes out with a smash hit like Sat Night Feaver or like Officer & Gentalman did for country (more over Gillies)

    in reply to: 50th Birthday Bash…. #37172

Conveniently forget about the Doors! bad move there to get off on the wrong foot – play Bad mama jamm for her intro – It will play out like a wedding, the guests will have different tastes and you end up playing dance music since they want to dance, and you want them to dance. you are limited to segar “old time rock and roll” and springsteen “dancin in the dark”, love shack… make sure you play two slow songs on the hour! if you want to more work from that crowd

in reply to: Any tips for an aspiring 14 year old DJ? #37125

don’t let other ppl define you, move on from the neg. and be happy with yourself! no one eles counts in your business. Learn as much as you can, pratice your craft, and enjoy, what much or little you get in return. Digital is KING! and all others are doing their thing, and that’s OK. We were geting get flamed on line by our compitition for using Ipod mixer’s when we first started, i’ve never heard of an Ipod skipping, failing in the midle of a song, and lots of ppl use 100 million of them every day, world wide. didn’t hurt us a bit! we moved on and so should you.

in reply to: Controlling the volume level #36892

Sounds like you know what the limit is, I know how low the music is in the booth, so It’s that much more on the floor.
If you cant get someone one the floor, do a sound check/level ck in the morning.

in reply to: Money and Djing…… #36891

Find a way, better yet find your way. Stay clear of neg. thoughts and FOCUS on what your two feet are holding up first!
Do you want to make money or make music? I like money and begged and barrowed to get my fist “all in one” mixer , dual record player combo. Traded my trap set for speakers and amp. I was 16 at the time. But made it work out the best I could. It was impressive alright and I had to hussle to get jobs. And i’m still doing it , only now for my two kids, and yes they earn allot more because from day one I set them up with not a $1300 NS7, but a $250 ICDMix2 and showed them how to make money. They earned enough money(x2) and bought one a year ago. x2 as in they need to have twice the price amount in the bank then what they want to spend, as not to be equipment rich and cash poor! A curse most Dj’s have. Their bedroom dj friends kind of wish they could do what they are doing, but they cant because they are wishing and not doing.

in reply to: Being a DJ ruins music enjoyment? #36376

As much as I love music, now I tend to go out of my way when there is live music to stop and take it in. There was a time when I played music, and know both sides. The computer I’m typing this from is hooked up to 1100 Watt suround sound and playing from VDj an oldie or two.

in reply to: How many Dj's are too much? #36375

The Venue is using 9 FaceBook/twitter accounts to secure a steady crowd! Your expected to promote them, not them promoting YOU! They WILL fail and blame everyone but them self’s. 9 are you kidding me…… no good can come from this in the long run. I’d look around, real hard to find the next gig, before the other 8 catch on. Hurry your wasting time reading……..

in reply to: Help needed, big time. #36049

Hey, don’t discount the potential of any gig. You never know what a friend of a friend or relative can do for your future earnings! Kid’s parties are attended by young mommies who have 25th wedding anniversary parents with 50yr wedding anniversary parents. Or they have friends getting married or graduating from collage or………. make the most of every situation.

in reply to: Help needed, big time. #36040

But, you had to count on yourself to show up with the proper cables, didn’t you fail just a little (pre-gig preparation)? In the states it’s not as bad getting cables on the fly, if you look ahead to the area you’re going to be in (pre-gig preparation). We carry a bunch of extra cables and cords. Set your expectations low when you shop for gear and accessory’s (mental preparation). Shows and conventions are were the pros are. Most of the time if it’s a big job or faraway, we set all the equipment up and break it down, then load it up right away, and then travel to the gig (pre-gig preparation). Who needs the ag before you start? Been there done that, now it’s smooth sailing. Learn by OTHERS mistake$, it’s a lot cheeper.

in reply to: How Much Did Your First Gig Earn You? #35939

I traded my Premier Drum kit to buy my first dual rec. player mixer combo , to do Dico dances at High Schools for $100 US. that’s about 500 today. I was not liking the thought of splitting 200 between 5 band members! Learned at 17yr’s old , what a pain HS dances were, moved on to corner bar gigs that paid 150 and drunks were more fun than tweens. And beef and beer’s, weddings, topped them all, even got flashed a few times, priceless.

in reply to: What to answer my boss? #35936

record everything you are doing now, listen to it,over and over, and use the prerecorded sets and add “lightly” an over sample or effect live. No need to think you are armin van buuren and ppl came to see you put a show on. You are the window dressing, so enjoy it and make the best of it.
