ParticipantTotally and utterly up to you mate, whatever feels more comfortable for you. I personally have used both methods over the years, started out using the crossfader (with both channels up full), then switched to crossfader in the middle and used the channels, then switched back a couple of years ago! A lot of ‘pros’ (or resident D.J’s who think they know everything!) might sneer at people who use the crossfader, certainly i’ve found that most clubs i’ve played at the mixer had the crossfader in the middle and everyone used the channels, but watever you’re happier with is honestly fine, theres no right and wrong in my opinion, as long as you’re not pushing the mixer into the red when your mid-mix, (i.e with the crossfader in the middle and both channels up) then you’re gonna sound fine…

ParticipantFailing that, totally agree with the lads here, get into the nites with a mix or 2 in your pocket and talk to Dj’s, promotors, whoever, my gigging days are behind me now but got a few spots in town by just drunkenly approaching lads with a cd or watever 🙂

ParticipantHows it goin buddy, theres a group of promotors called ‘Mess’d Up Records’ who put on a load of gigs in town (Dublin) and are always asking for people to send in mixes, lookin for local talent etc. You’d find them of Facebook or watever i’m sure, few of my mates have played for them and they’re always on the lookout for Dj’s, warm-up spots or watever. Mainly Techno i think, not sure wat style you play, but sure bang them in a mix and see wat happens?
Best of luckBeedle
ParticipantI always plan every second of the mix, down to the last beat, then when i get behind the decks every time without fail it all goes out the window! Nearly always stick to and opening one or two tracks that are planned, but then between the vibe on the nite/crowd reaction, i invariably go off on one and see where i end up! Having said that, all the practice on certain mixes and tune-selection helps immensely when you’re ‘on-the-fly’, i suppose at the end of the day it always come back to the number one rule of DJ’ing, know your tunes!!! 😉

ParticipantTotally agree with Phil here, been in a couple of similar situations, i play Deep House/bit of Techno, which a lot of my mates love but when you’re playin a 30th birthday or watever, not everyones gonna like it! So in the past friends have asked me to play some indie etc. at the start of the nite and go nuts later with watever i want, i accepted the challenge and had a ball! Played lots of Roses, Bowie, Primal Scream, all sorts, at the start of the nite, just loaded them into Traktor straight from iTunes (i’m sure you can get something similar sorted depending on your software?) didnt really worry about beatmatching and tempos, (trust me, your audience wont care either) and just enjoyed it 🙂 Even started looping and Fx’ing a bit of ‘Fools Gold’ and it went down a storm, so basically just have fun with it, then later in the nite when everyones well on their way, start playing your own stuff, (which i’m sure will go down well as you said your friend likes your Dupsteppy stuff anyway).
Anyway, best of luck with the gig, hope you give it a go and just have fun with it! (and let us know how it went afterwards)Cheers

I Recognise and Understand this Feeling Very Well;
But My Formula for ‘After Gig Come Down’; is to Immediately Start Work On My Next Set;
I Find that as I am Already ‘Buzzing’ from the Gig; I am ‘Ready To Continue’; and ‘Always’ come up with Something Very Special; even if it is just One Amazing Transisition into Another;
It is The Element Of ‘Feeling Satisfied’ that Needs To Be Fulfilled;
And going to bed ‘Knowing’ that you have ‘Already Began The Preparation For Your Next Gig’ Really Helps Me 😎Couldnt agree more, just get straight back on the decks! (after a bit of kip of course) buy some new tunes and get goin again, i normally get inspired after a gig as well 🙂

ParticipantI also cant fault the Omni-Control, had it for about a year, broke off the cross-fader knob but that was mainly due to drunken stupidity 🙂 Played good few house-parties and one small sized club with it and cant fault the sound-card either, its always delivered. I’ve never felt that the knobs were too close together, never had a problem on that score, cant comment on the mixtrack Pro but can defo recommend the Omni, good luck 🙂

ParticipantYeah exact same dilemma meself, have a Numark Omni-Control, does the job nicely for boppin around the bedroom but lookin to upgrade and i’m torn between those exact 3 machines. I’m thinkin S2 tho, not interested in 4-deck madness, and the S4 seems too big to lug around to gigs, altho i have 2 1210’s gathering dust so the inputs for turntables on the S4 and Denon might swing it, ah f*ck it i cant decide 🙂 I’ll wait for your S2 review Phil, i think thats gonna be the one…
