That’s a good point, Phil. I was ultimately trying to get it to write the camelot code and the actual key into a field other than comments, so that I could use the comments field to tag the tracks when mixing from Traktor.

I just noticed that there was the ‘comments 2’ box within Traktor. Apparently it is not read from anything other than Traktor.

I can edit the tags using RE3 to show the key in camelot code, and then I have to write the actual key in the comments field. RE3 does write both camelot code and actual key to the grouping field, but that field is useless in Traktor.

So I guess I cannot have my cake and eat it too in this situation w/o using the comments 2 field to show either the actual key or my notations.

Given that the grouping field, I believe, is viewable via Itunes, perhaps I should just use comment2 window for actual key in Traktor and be done with.

I was also somewhat concerned that Traktor would overwrite my tag info using 2.4, and would not be viewable in Windows 7, but thus far (fingers crossed), there has not been an issue. I see it in my folders in my HDD, and when analyzing it with mp3 tag software, it shows that it is using 2.3.

As always, I appreciate your personal replies.

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

BB

From what I am gathering, it looks like Traktor doesn’t have the grouping field; only Serato.

So I might have to just use the comments field.

If I’m wrong, though, I’d love a second opinion.

Thanks, Phil! I’ll look into that and report back on the results.

By the way, a big thanks to you for this site and the You Tube vids.

Your story echoes my own in many fashions, so it was very easy to identify with, and very inspiring.

There have been days when I thought, “Oh God, what have I gotten myself into?”

Still others where I know I have the passion and fit the big 7 list perfectly, but don’t feel like I have the technical skill.

A quick refresh of your vids helps put me back on my bike.

Keep up the good work.

Edit:

Sorry, forgot to clarify on the Traktor thing. I know Traktor shows the key. I meant to say that I would like to figure out how to set up a filter on how to search by the camelot code key number and BPM at the same time.

I’m sort of stuck on this right now myself.

The advice I got from a local guy that gigs out is to go with a cheap mac.

He said that his windows went to update itself somehow and it crashed his setup completely. Before and after. Died a horrible death.

My laptop has 3GB RAM and a dual core AMD processor. MY HDD has 320 GB, but I have pretty much eaten most of that up. It will need a serious trimming, should I go out with it.

No issues, thank God, as of yet, but I am considering a used mac to be on the safe side.

Will be either the S2 or the Denon, choices choices, and want to order next weekend.

I suppose I should clarify:

The price drop was for the VCI 300 and the Traktor S2. The conversation evolved, as I decided to step up and go with the Denon 6000 series mixer/controller.

I would recommend the Denon, since it is a badass little piece of kit, and can act as a standalone mixer as well.

As to best UK sites, sadly I cannot give you an idea there.

In the US, the best price I could find was 700 USD.

Im saving up for the S4 then saving for Pioneers then so I can run them via MIDI or HID controlling all 4 decks at the same time without having to push buttons to switch.. giving u a better work flow I think.

Agreed. I am going to pick up some used Pioneer CDJ 400s. I found a good deal and had some room left in my budget if the price was right. They were a bit more than I wanted to spend, but not so much that it did not make sense to release the funds.

The advice I was given by my ‘elders’, if you like, was to buy right the first time so I do not have to keep re-buying.

Since much of the gear seems to keep its resale value over time, this seems like a sensible argument.

I’ll have to leave it to the experts here to answer you on that one. However, in another post I started, somebody said they went w/ a Traktor controller because they were offering a free upgrade to the new software when it comes out.

That would be a freebie of about 78.00 USD, by their current upgrade prices.

I briefly considered the VCI 100, because it got high marks, but in the end, went with the Denon 6000 for the reasons I stated.

Guys? Thoughts?

You can see a similar setup with an s4 here

Also, if you go with S2, you’ll get traktor pro and a free upgrade to v2.5 with the new remix deck functionality when released in May.

That was an excellent suggestion, and probably would have been the route I would have gone, should I have chosen Traktor. Better deal than the S4, I would reckon.

I just bought Traktor Pro, and hopefully I will get an option to upgrade at a discount. I had no idea that Traktor was going to offer a free upgrade to the new software. I figured that the price drop came as a bait in order to lure you in to buy the new software. So to offer it for would be a nice bonus.

In the end, I went with a Denon 6000 series, bought Traktor Pro, and am looking at some CDJs at a decent price for the purpose of learning them.

Expensive, yes, but better to do it right the first time, investment wise.

I’d love to hear how your setup ends up working out.

Also I found MC3000 and VCI 100 for 500$ and 600$, is there any place they are cheaper?

BTW
What is Midi Fighter exactly? I didn’t understand how to use it with effects and why is it good with a controller?

Thanks!

Hi Adam. Thanks for starting this post. A big thumbs up plus one.

I don’t know if you can do Amazon over there, but they have it at around the 400 dollar price range.

http://www.amazon.com/Native-Instruments-Traktor-Kontrol-S2/dp/B005K2RYA2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331805091&sr=8-1

Same with this site:

http://store.djtechtools.com/traktor-kontrol-s2.html

That site has a few bells and whistles (sample pack, mapping, shiny buttons) extra for free. I don’t know how much you’d pay for duties/customs and shipping. Sorry.

I checked long and hard on ebay and lots of 3rd party sites, and that is basically the Xbox/Apple wa.y that Native Instruments seems to be doing business right now. Most, if not all sites are set at a bare minimum of 399 USD.

This site will field offers for negotiation, but I don’t know how much they will be willing to go down. Give it a shot, though. I know someone who got a decent deal by asking.

http://www.proaudiostar.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=kontrol+s2

Hope this helps.

DJ Hessler, post: 16819, member: 537 wrote: Some clarification:

The only time you will need an “extra” soundcard is if you want to use timecode (for rotating platters or CDJs that does not have MIDI) For extra MIDI you will not need any more soundcard than the one in the MC3000!

You can connect 2x CD players to the MC3000 and mix them with a knob 1 2 if you want to play audio CDs
Or you can connect extra MIDI divices simultainusly to your laptop for extra knobs and buttons.

As I think it is CDJ400 for example can be connected to MC3000 and play from audio CD or USB.
CDJ400 can also be connected as MIDI device to the laptop for extra knobs and buttons (but you will have to map it by hand)

And welcome to the Denon fanclub 😉

Thanks. The soundcard argument was basically a concern that I would not get true 24 sound when trying to record my mixes, mashups, what have you. And that I might need one for timecoding at a later point. The DJ/IO, obviously, is actually very good for what it is. But not good enough to handle the task. I can trade it in for credit at a store towards a soundcard that would handle it, or I can keep it around for emergencies.

Thanks for clarification on the Timecode and how to wire things up on the Denon. The timecode thing, for now, is moreso of an ‘all cross that bridge when I get to it’ kind of thing. But since it was/is confusing, your information was really helpful wade through the muck.

I officially got my Denon fanclub membership card today. I went with the 6000. I cannot wait to drive her!

LOL. Nice one, Marco. Yeah, I am talking about the MC6000.

I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the s4.

Feel free to post your own impressions once you get to playing around with it.

Yes, I know that some models can use USB. I was looking at some CDJ 400s that can do this. Low end, but cheap compared to the 1000s. The reason I say CDs is that I am interested in going at it somewhat old school.

Controllers are cooler, but some of the clubs I go to are still stuck in their ways about what you can spin with.

But it will be nice to have that ability. It still seems silly to waste an entire CD on one song though, and be restricted to such a limited playlist. But whatever. The point is to get a well rounded education.

Thanks for the replies.

Agreed. Sync is no no. I would be running them using CDs.

Yeah, I saw that. In the end, my budget allowed for more breathing room (tax season), so I narrowed it down to either an s4 or the Denon.

I think I’m going to go with that. Thanks for replying though! Totally makes sense.
