ParticipantHustle, Hustle, and more Hustle! Time for another monday post!
One big realization over last week… promoting a gig a month and a half before the event is too long. The hype starts to die after about 2 or three weeks. Lesson learned, next time I’l start promoting my events 2 weeks prior to the event and push alot harder.
Another lesson. Do it yourself and dont rely on anyone unless you’ve known them to do work consistantly. The Bussinessman has fallen out of favor with me and The Tech. This sunday was suppsto be a practice session before the event thats happening in a couple of days. He didint show up, or call, and I can’t get a hold of him. If we land these regular gigs I will basically lose a graphic designer. Lesson learned, learn as much as you can about everything so that you can do it yourself if you are in a tough spot. I am going to need to find time.
And one more. I need to get a refund on diablo 3… >.>; it is a terrible time sink. Even though I’ve been using it as a reward system after practice… I should be practising more in the first place, or reading, or learning or promoting.
This time I am setting a month goal to go out and hustle! Epic goal time!
Throw a party! actually! Throw two! By the end of this month have two parties going to promote events and play infront of a crowd. One will be at my buddies place and the other will be a BBQ event at mine.
Practice. I’ve been staying up until 1am most nights now I find that I sleep better even though its less sleep. I will use this time to learn everything and Anything about DJing.
Promote x level over 9000. Thursday – Sat go out and promote myself, and meet women and promoters.

If I was to give an analogy, it’s like getting into your car and having the interior redone awesomely. It’s still your car and you know where everything is, but now you have purple leather and exciting new buttons on your dashboard. So to end this long rambling post, I respect both, but I like mixing more. It feels more like performing and making the music your own.Good analogy here!

Well, my intent wasn’t to slap him as a DJ, per se, but the name. You can be a decent DJ with a goofy name.
My real name is Mike, and I get a lot of stupid suggestions for that name by non-club people, etc.
It’s kinda like “jumpin'” John, “crazy” Carl, “Wacky” William, “Sexy” Susie, etc. (and I didn’t google these names either.)Yeah, but I find this harder to do as I get older and have moved overseas. I have a one generation FB rule, but I like to stay in touch with my younger relatives who communicate mainly via Facebook. And the lines between friend and co-worker (and FB vs. LinkedIn) are blurred. I also like to stay in touch with “cool’ people I’ve worked with, but the professional connection is still there. Some of my Grad School drinking buddies are now starting to become serious professionals.
I like to keep work and personal life separated. I understand in this type of profession you need to keep a good crowd/fans and you do that by being personal, but I have things on my FB that I wouldent want fans to see and constantly updating and promoting my events would get boring fast to some of my friends who dont want to see updates. With a FB page I have both options.

ParticipantI just ignore it. All the big names made a name for themselves and there is nothing wrong with that. If you don’t like certain music don’t play it, but know that mainstream brings a crowd, but so does other types of music if its in the right place.

Participantyup, thats the only way.

Its not really a small town but a small city. They so like progressive hits but are a little late. For example, last year One from SHM was THE song of the hour and could play 3 times a night, now on a local resident dj’s top them you see tiesto’s zero 76. My music would definatly take off on a good pace, but i know i would still play 60 to 70% radio hits. So choosing the right order not to lose anyone and possibly getting booked again… When ill feel ready that is!
I think you are looking for the magic pill before actually playing infront of the crowd :/ … The best way to learn which song order is to play infront of others… and that means having those top 40’s in there most of the time. You will only truly know is when you play infront of others… so get out there and stop worrying.

ParticipantThats how my group is setting up our event. We are mixing top 40 with music we like. Some top 40+ some other pumping stuff, and so on.

ParticipantExperiment, experiment, and some more experimenting! Take two songs and play around with their beats for like 20 mins and you will start to see what works and what doesnt, then you can move onto other songs. Listen to the recordings afterwards and see what works.

They’re nothing but human jukeboxes playing middle of the road songs for middle of the road people. A newbie will never progress to be great solid deejay being a wedding dj. A wedding dj is where never-beens and has-beens go when they fall off. It won’t teach anything about song selection because 99% of the music you play is top 40 hits from 70’s,80’s and 90’s. It won’t teach how put together a solid mix of Hip Hop or latin grooves. It won’t teach you to dig for music. It won’t teach to be creative and experiment mixing songs you initially thought would not work together. Playing song to make 60 year old aunt betty dance won’t teach you about song selection because aunt betty has piss poor taste in music and is stuck in the past.
to answer the OP question all songs can be mentally catagorized. Some songs you know people will dance to they 10,9. some songs some, most of the people dance to they 8,7 and some songs most people won’t dance to but will love to hear they 6. The magic foumula for rocking dance floor is:
song 1: 10,9
song 2: 10,9
song 3: 8,7
song 4: 10,9Rinse and repeat for how ever long your set is.
I am not understanding your formula… could you be a little more clear in your explination? Also I really don’t think that there is a “Magic formula” nothing in life has a “Magic pill”. + That was a bit harsh about wedding DJ’s I am sure you are quite wrong.

Haha, nah I got it guy and thank you means alot! Believe it or not though I hated writing for a long long time since i was (still am) a horrible speller. But once I got into grade 11 I got a great english teacher and realized how great it is. I’ve been doing creative writing, poetry and short stories, ever since.

The way my buddy did it was by covering his screen with a black piece of paper completely cutting off the screen.

ParticipantPosting a bit earlier then usual this time, Its 12:30 but still counts as Monday!
Not much to report this week. I finally set up a mix that I like, but I feel it can still be alot better…
Tell me what you think,
Otherwise, all I’ve been doing this weekend is practice practice and practice! Two weeks until my event… so just setting up my play list and killer tunes. Another cool thing is that I finnally started making a legitimate music crate where im slowly replacing all my favorite songs with the ones that I bought.
The Tech showed up today for some practice at mine. We hooked up two controllers and mixed between eachother. Its kinda cool. The Bussinessman went out to meet some DJ at a club that I was supposto go to. He ended up drinking and not showing up for the practice session… I don’t know what happened at the club and if he really made some connections but im not happy that he didint show up today.
As for last weeks post i feel kinda better i talked to my boss about my work hours and they are going to be cut enough for me to have some more time to mix. For now il keep the job and keep saving money. I figure i will know what i want soon, just gotta wait.
This weeks major goal other then pratice is to create a mix CD… My promo playlist is a start but the choice of music and over all mixing could be better in my oppinion + I need start looking and setting up a list of all the places to try to DJ at.
