ParticipantCompletely agree, Emma. While I would love to get pointers and how-to’s from a DJ known for their style and influence, rather than just their image I can see my self, too, borrowing from their style- even if it’s just a failsafe.
But learning on your own, taking hints her-and-there and developing your own style definitely separates you from those that only want to DJ for the limelight. It also gives you a bit more pride and sincerity in your approach and people recognize that to a crazy extent- thus giving you more credibility and fans who love your work for you.. not because it reminds them of DJ blah-blah 🙂Arthol Gibson
ParticipantDJ GRE, post: 73 wrote: What is it that makes Serato such a club favorite?
I think Serato’s rise to fame was from what D-Jam and a few others said about DVS setups and using vinyl but I also think it’s because it shipped and still ships with alot of the hardware that clubs and DJs would employ… I could be wrong, don’t quote me but from what I’ve seen with packages and the like it seems to be the case.
Nowadays you’d see the likes of Traktor and and other titles because they jumped on the bundling wagon. Also it would kind of seem like a commonsense thing to learn/stick with if you have/had someone teach you the ropes of DJing using SSL or if you get booked at a club with it’s own setup and they have Serato boxes/Rane mixers or other mixers fashioned for Serato usage :/ would save you alot of setup time if the software YOU like clashes with the setup you have to use.

ParticipantIt’s awesome that this forum is parented by such a great array of help articles and tips 🙂 not to mention the sincere nature of the members

ParticipantThis is a great question.. most of my responses have been laid out by a few of you and I do love Emma’s input.
Oddly enough, just socially, alot of girls have come up to me or engaged convo around the ins and outs and learning the basics of DJing. So, unless theyre just that type of girl, I sense the stigma slowly breaking.. especially in an industry where ‘sex sells’ :rolleyes:Arthol Gibson
ParticipantFor the moment I’m really digging Jamie XX’s style. Really loved the album he did with Gil Scott-Heron.
Clinton Sparks frequents my listens too, especially his work with DJ Snake but he has an even balance of hits and misses 😉
Moby is still one of my fave go-to people when he puts new stuff out. …will come back to share more as alot elude me right now

After that I play that new song “Sweat” and “Love is gone” after a few tracks I give in and cut in “The world is mine” and finally he recognizes the track and gives me thumbs up and all that..
LOL.. that is such a classic reveler.
Riding on that though.. the folks that peeve me the most are the “Umbrella Requester” you know, the ones that give you a general heading hoping that the Ms. Cleo in you can interpret the specific song they want to hear.

ParticipantSome of my ‘tracks’ can be heard here : http://soundcloud.com/dj-ampero
Of which: http://soundcloud.com/dj-ampero/the-last-hotel-room is the one I’m most proud of 🙂

ParticipantI started with VDJ up to vers 7, will always love it. For work I had to learn the ropes with Serato SL and I kinda dig it.. I stayed away from it for years because I didnt have the gear to warrant learning it (AND because it always seemed to follow the ‘all the cool people are doing it’ ideal). In a week or so I’ll be running with ITCH’s four-deck version.. also have Abelton and MixMeister Fusion, both of which I’ve been procrastinating with learning

ParticipantWe may have to conduct a study with the connection between DJing and Cooking as I enjoy it as well 🙂
I also write critiques and reviews for movies on a local community website. I will soon be publishing video tours of my city (Nassau, Bahamas) with a few friends. I like video games as well, my only release outside of music. I do a bit of social satire and commentary in guest spots for local bloggers and I’m a retired systems engineer/computer tech.Arthol Gibson
ParticipantDigitall DJ, post: 225 wrote: I am swayed towards the Sony Vaio series, but no-one has mentioned them…
I used to be a sony fan myself but I find that alot of their options are proprietary and they can weigh heavily on crunch-time performance. With vaios too.. if you opt to do a clean install of the OS like D-Jam suggested you can lose alot of the functionality and in a few instances OS-specific drivers can be hard to come by. These findings are a few years old but are just a heads up.
I currently have a Toshiba Satellite with 4gb of RAM. Hasnt made me swear during a gig yet 🙂

ParticipantMy next purchase will either be a flight case for my NS6 or some powered speakers.. the speakers have priority though

ParticipantWhen I first started I had a pair of Numark HF125’s and I bought me a set of SkullCandy Hesh cans.. Theyre pretty solid, aside from the build quality. I get decent sound from the 50mm drivers and the clarity in sound is great enough for leisure listening and not too distracting, as I find the Beats by Dre to be.. I dont think Ive been around, headphone-wise to make any recommendations yet 🙂

ParticipantIf youre talking full library of songs.. Im clocking somewhere around 240 Gigs or so. Years of collecting. Of that I probably use 10 Gigs in my sets :/ .. I know, Phil.. I have slapped my own wrist, lol
