Important for me when going to a club is the concept of the place. This goes hand in hand with the talent. I like a dark room (with appropriate lights, of course), with a great sound system, with a DJ who plays the kind of music I love. Then I am as happy as I can be.

Everything else is just noise and distraction. Bottle service? give me a break. Girls thinking they are hot shit and dudes flashing money to impress people they don’t like.. ***king hell…

Not for me! The places I like to go to have the music and sound as most important factors. One of my most favorite clubs, The Villa in Oslo, is a perfect example.

Booming sound system, dark cellar like area, dance floor taking up almost the whole area. . . . This is clubbing. This is Real.

Clubs who have the bottle service and Calvin Harris-music have a different concept, with different clientele. It is definitely not music and sound that is important. Rather it is the business of selling bottles and purveying an image of success. Bouncers with nice suits and earplugs in the front. Line to get in. VIP treatments… Ugh.

No wonder their businesses are hurting when they have lost their souls in the process.

That is a great source! Thanks!

On another note, I am finding remixing a track almost more difficult than making one from scratch! Very, very tricky!

In that case, going back to the mixtape issue, the person in question should then have mixtapes reflecting anything and everything he/she would be willing to play!

For me, I think if you start compromising on the style you play, your identity as a DJ might get watered down or confused… I mean, say someone sees you at a party playing the music that you love and the crowd really connects! Then you get a different gig, but the people throwing the party wants you to play Top 40 hits, or whatever.

There could be a situation where people would want to go, in order to see you play! But then you play all this other music and the connection is lost forever!

I think you know where I am going with this. I understand that as a person living off from being a DJ it is tempting to take all paying gigs that you can. But in my world at least, I would rather stay true to the style/music, hopefully get a small following, keep getting gigs and get paid that way. It is more difficult, but at least you are clear about who you are, the music you play, and people will not get confused.

I should add that I don’t listen to a broad range of music myself… Well, I actually do, but I like particular artists and bands, not genres. hard to explain. I’m very particular, lets just say, so there is a lot of stuff I could never make myself listen to, let alone play 😀

I agree with Black Rag.. still, a person that has spent the time in learning how to mix properly will utilize the software better.. I think. And Hope! Its like a chef, right. You never make complicated dishes unless you can master the basics.

To go back to the issue, I let my mixtapes reflect what I would be playing, pretty much no matter what. I have gotten offers to play at parties, but they wanted a certain style of music. I thanked them, but turned the gigs down. They have to look for a different DJ. I play my style of music, thats it! I do this for the music I love, so I don’t really compromise on that…
