Congrats! As a father to a four and two year old I can relate to your struggles to find quality time for practice. Never forgot that kids are only young once and they grow so fast so enjoy the time that you have. Make it quality time because the music will still be there even if you have to step away for a while. Don’t forget your better half either and make sure to set aside time for them or they’ll resent you for having your face glued to your computer for the hour before you go to bed but yet can’t find 10 minutes to talk to them.

    As far suggestions:

    1. Remove all distractions when practicing and have a plan going in what you want to do. You’ll get more out of focused 30 min then a 90 min session floating around.

    2. If at all possible curate and organize your music everywhere but home so that your not doing tedious tasks like this or similar when you have some time to yourself and are able to actually hit the decks.

    3. This might be harder with twins but if both kids are doing tummy time do quick sessions of mixing where you can monitor them. The music will be good for them and you’ll get a little bit of practice that will whet your appetite before they go down for bed.

There are some nice controllers in this years survey to be won as well…but yeah I have my eye on that A&H 43C.

Thanks for the heads up, I was disappointed when they scrapped the v1 release of this mixer.

I have two models of Fusion bags. I’ve been using the DJ backpack for the past two years and recently picked up the DJ workstation.

I’ve stuffed a VCI 380, 15″ laptop, headphones and cables inside the DJ backpack but it’s a tight fit. It’s better suited for someone using a pair of X1s, audio interface but in a pinch it works well.

I bought the DJ workstation to fit in my VCI 400 along with headphones and a pair of midifighters with plenty of room to spare. I knew the bag was huge but on a short guy like me 5’7″ it’s definitely a load on my shoulders.

Overall I think they are great bags but overpriced. Their sturdy, have lots of pockets, and are made of good materials. Their zip away feature works great too when loading and unloading the bag. I paid less then 40% of retail price for both bags so if you look around you might score a good deal on them.

    That’s a great goal.

I usually hear these type of things stretching out over 30 days and many find that time frame difficult. Good luck to you, I’ll definitely take a listen over that time.

A good starting point is the free lessons or better yet the paid courses here at DDJT.

It does a good job of giving you a solid base and many have used it with great success.

I think your right to choose the software first.

I’d say Serato is more suited to you if you want a simpler interface that’s ready to use out of the box and spin hip hop or similar music. Traktor is more suited to someone who likes to get into the nitty gritty of the software and are mixing house or similar genres.

I use both but prefer Serato.

    Great little compact mixer.

I love my Vestax 380, just be prepared that support will be non-existent. I’d go for the VCI 380 over the VCI 300MK2 mainly for the pads. A plus for you is that Ableton and Serato can share the same card on the controller. Ill Gates is a fan of the VCI 380 for one of those reasons.

I have the VCI 380 (which has an internal soundcard) and it’s more than plenty loud. I’ve run it directly to a pair of 12″ ZLX speakers using XLR connections and it sounded great.

I’ve never bothered to run it through my mixer (DJM 3000) and then my speakers but I’m assuming there would be minimal difference.

I think a comparable price point to the VCI 380 would be the DDJ-SR. You might want to consider waiting to see what a revamped Vestax puts out so that it’ll be supported going forward. I don’t think they’ll bother doing anything for their legacy products.

    +1

I would be interested to know this as well. In particular a use case basis for what venues/gigs these would be appropriate for? I would be using these for store front gigs and really like the portability. The only two negatives I have heard about the DLM that I’m wondering are present on the Denon are if they are flat in the mids and shaking at high volumes.
