Participantmaybe Im wrong but I understand what you say to mean you are trying to make your night succesful for fame (have a sizable audience and following while you play your great music) rather than fortune (tons of ticket sales and drink sales commission) … In this case you should try to figure out how to make things free in order to attract a crowd, you can contact someone from any alcohol or soft drink company and ask them to sponsor your night meaning they give you x amount of free cases of their beverage for your night and you put their brand name on your flyers so its a kind of free advertising / marketing for them and also attracts people to come party with you win/win If your night is free entrance and free drinks or free anything it will be easy to get a big crowd, Your bringing more djs idea is cool but the truth is most people that go to the clubs arent that cooncerned with the music unless its really bad Anyone who just really wants to hear great music has the internet and radio to fulfill that so do try to fulfill what bar goers want apart from music, see lots of pretty people , free drinks, etc.

ParticipantYou mentioned gaming laptops being the high end As I understand gaming laptops devote alot of power to video graphics Does that translate to better handling of audio software for dj ing?

ParticipantThanks bad robot Yeah im also like having more on board usb sockets Good to know that i should avoid windows 10 i had not thought of that My current laptop is win 8.1 which i dont like much i downloaded 10 and was pretty happy it seemed way faster and well designed until i noticed i can barely type on it after a few words the cursor would disappear and i have to click to type again it made writing my papers impossible and i downgraded back to win 8.1 again So u think windows 7 is the way to go for dj ing?

ParticipantThe other day in a chat room someone was talking about techno producer “villalobos” to which a very popular Dj replied who is that? the argument turned into “you are not a real dj if you dont know villalobos” it was meme worthy haha yeah so basically if you dont know villalobos like he is not on your contacts list you are not a real dj, if you call villalobos house and his mom has to be all like “may i ask whos calling” instead of already knowing its you and putting villalobos on then you are not a real dj just turn in your dj card and retire …hahah sorry I had to share that story I always think of that whenever someone mentions what is a real dj
But for real to answer your question its basically whenever you want to call yourself a dj there is no standard achievement to legitimize yourself other than just actually dj’ing

Participantthanks peter! yeah the first scenario using the cd drives on a computer that’s what I meant but with audio cds instead of mp3 cds .. if it can work with audio cds Im thinking about putting two external usb cd drives on my laptop to make my controller into a “poor man’s” dual cd player 😛 I tried an audio cd with virtual dj and it works I read somewhere online Serato also can , I’ve been looking at the recordbox controllers from pioneer and thinking about making that my next purchase so that’s why Im wondering if the recordbox software can also read audio cds on a laptop

Participanttry looking at the playlists of “now that’s what I call music” plenty of party and pop songs for dancing and would be liked by all ages … for the eating and chatting parts try some hiphop instrumentals , light rock, or jazzy songs

ParticipantBeing a dj you are the center of attention in the club lets just call it “famous” for a lack of better words, alot of people dont know how to act around famous people and since you the dj made such a deep impression on them they want to do something to stand out and share in your fame and let you remember them too unfortunately it mostly means being annoying, having alot of cool fans is really encouraging but for the people going out of there way to annoy you try to put up a physical barrier like put all your bags chairs whatever at the entrance of the dj booth to discourage people from getting to close, also if someone is bothering too much its good to have a friend nearby to play bad cop and they can be the one to tell them to go buzz off and u can just concentrate on being the nice guy dj without having offended anyone, some cool fans its not annoying but just distracting when alot of people come and want to ask the name of the song or just say they like your music ,for these cool fans I printed a qr code and made it visible so anyone who wants to talk to me can just add me on their phone and after im done ill be glad to chat with them online, Some uncool people bother alot coming in and asking how much does my equipment cost and completely random topics like street directions or even more extreme like this one guy would come and stand next to me and start pulling my hair or another guy come and start dancing on me and almost knock over the dj booth I now put chairs and junk to block these kinds of people from coming close and also have my friend who will not very politely tell them to get lost ,you never know who those annoying people are maybe they are the club owners friend or someone with influence maybe they might later become one of your super cool supporters that you count on ,so its a very delicate balance to try to not offend these people that are annoying you

ParticipantOther dj’s will notice your transitions while regular bar patrons will just notice your music selection, you can learn more cool ways to mix in the future dont let that stop you from playing more gigs now in the present
Dj vitico BL
Participantit depends on a million different things but you should be paid at LEAST 4-500 dollars a night, you are flying from England all the way across the pond and then some to LA so your gig should not be charged in “hours” played because you are spending a lot more hours on a plane just to get there,
but even more important : how well do you know these people and why did they invite you to play there? if its someone you have met in person and they are familiar with your music and a genuine fan of your mixes then congratulations you have hit the big time and living the dream! if this is just someone online be careful, just like the “nigerian prince scams” there are plenty of similar scams revolving around djs and talent they will claim they need to buy some equipment for your show and what they are really doing is just buying stuff with stolen credit cards and shipping it to your house so you can send it to them, also they may ask for your passport information and the like since they are going to”buy your flights” but its just an identity theft trick
as you said “be safe and enjoy the music”!

ParticipantTodd: yeah ! that was my first choice actually but the price and weight and size of a decent complete powerbox was too much , so i lowered my expectations down to a car battery and an inverter but seems i need to learn so much electrical knowledge and also the danger of electrocuting myself so it kind of scared me off 😛

ParticipantVintage: Actually i would not be using a laptop on the controller , I would use a usb battery pack to power the controller (if a laptop can power it then a usb battery pack is enough) , my original question was im searching for a usb powered mixer, my goal IS to be able to dj with cds in an outdoor park with no electrical outlets , right now i basically have a full set up on battery power except a mixer , i do have an ipad with a controller (a pioneer wego 2 ,no audio inputs) , but i have a big cd collection and cd players that id just like to be able to use outside, sure i can just use the ipad , but id like to be able to use my cd players too, a battery powered dj mixer or usb powered controller with audio inputs is what im looking for
Dj vitico BL
ParticipantVintage: i have two tascam mixwell cd players They are 9v and i found something similar to a usb battery pack that works with them so i can use them outside ,So i guess basically i need a usb powered mixer/controller with rca input or 1/8 inch line input
Dj vitico BL
Participantthanks vintage yeah thts the same conclusion im coming to so basically i want a dj controller that has audio inputs but is usb powered some usb powered controllers have a mic input but im not sure which have real audio inputs any one knows ?
Dj vitico BL
Participantthanks bob i checked out your suggestions seems interesting but im looking for something less studio and more dj preferably something with a crossfader or at least can monitor the channel not playing into my headphones
