play what you think is good and don’t try and impress and be clever as it will end in tears.

Prepare as always. Do not expect to get it, stay cool and just have fun playing.

don’t go out of your comfort zone, just spin the way you would normally. know the type of music they want ahead of time. its cool if you win but if you don’t then don’t sweat it. losing is a great motivator for improvement 😀 also keep in mind that these contests are a GREAT way to get know other local djs, managers and promoters. Be sure to network while your there and keep a positive attitude.

best of luck and let us know how it goes!

Dance! And always look like you’re enjoying yourself (even if you’re shaking the entire time)

Do whatever it takes to loosen yourself up before you play…It will make the world of difference…tug one out have a drink or 2, listen to that one song that really gets your blood going.

I still get jitters here and there playing, and for me…this will sound really weird, but listening to ATB no rain over paradise while eating some pizza pockets before i get to the club is my usual routine…then i usually slam back 2 shots of jager and grab a couple of beers is my routine. Even then i still get nervous if its in a new venue.

As well its good form to show up early to your show so you can get comfortable and not have to rush in set up and play right away.

Forget its an audition, put up a show and play for yourself. The time is not enough to please everyone.

Nerves are probably the hardest thing to overcome at this point so preparation is the key. Obviously the ability to mix is a prerequisite of the job so I won’t say any more about that. Track selection is key. You want to be able to demonstrate what makes your sets unique and that you can keep people interested by picking appropriate music (which gets more people in the club which in turns sells more drinks – essentially the goal of most clubs). Play it safe and have some fun with it. Don’t get too carried away with pulling off tricks. I would mix as much as you can before the day and record your sets to analyse afterwards – but don’t be too critical as you are your harshest critic. Realistically person auditioning you won’t be half as aware of the music as you are.

Shorten your crate to only the tunes you know inside out and backwards.
