KeymasterWell firstly: Please no caps in thread titles, we are classy and do not need to shout, even if it is an emotionally hot topic.
Well I agree that especially with Traktor, there are lots of DJs out there who do not even know the basics about the software and cannot mix if their live depended on it. However this is not Traktor’s fault, it is the most hyped and most used DJ software out there and hence it is typical that also most “wannabees” will use it.
So as one could say: With fame (aka Traktor being very popular) also comes the downside (aka too many kiddy wannabe DJs using it). However I disagree with WIP banning it completely. I mean there are people like Ean Golden or our forum members like Hee and many more, who are well respected DJs with excellent skill who use Traktor.
So one could also argue that WIP’s auditioning or casting process simply is bad. You can easily see if someone is worth their money from a short audition and you do not even need to go that far, with 80% of the people you can prolly see it when you talk to them and what their reputation looks like. So I feel this is also a failure on WIPs side.November 26, 2012 at 4:09 pm #32582aaron altar
ParticipantI understand the problem with many who have no idea what they are doing but this is a failure to properly evaluate your djs as Terry said. A short mixtape could weed out a lot of people or, as Terry said, even a a short conversation.

ParticipantI was thinking this as I was reading it… I think the fact that traktor gets bundled with a lot of controllers these days including the ever popular s2/s4 being prime examples of entry level equipment, means that you are going to find more noobies using traktor as a starting point.
As mentioned above though I also agree with the fact that a simple interview or quick listen to a mixtape by an artist using traktor would filter the good from bad, and think that banning it all together will mean that some talent is missed!

ParticipantSo if I’m playing a set with my s4 and my f1, and I’m dropping tracks, freestyling for a little bit, then drop another track, then more freestyling and everyone is loving it, and I’m doing all this within traktor and yes I am using the sync button on absolutely everything, does this make me a bad dj? Hmmmm…

ParticipantIt’s honestly hilarious, there’s so many alternatives that are much easier than banning traktor. It’s probably gonna bite them in the ass in the end.

ParticipantI just laughed when i read about WIP banning traktor…really i think its more of a publicity stunt to get people talking about their promo company than any actual action being taken with regards to banning traktor.
You have some of the worlds biggest DJs, Ritche Hawtin, Carl Cox, John Aquaviva, Shiftee, Mstrkrft, the list goes on and on and on of famous DJs that use Traktor, really WIP you are going to refuse Ritchie Hawtin to play since he uses Traktor?
Hell id be surprised if a company like WIP could even afford to bring Ritchie Hawtin to their venue.
After a few minutes of looking at their website and facebook…i havent even recognized a single name within the last 6 months of DJs they have brought it…now im not saying that i am the GOD of knowing DJs and producers…but you would think if they were a large enough company they would be bringing in some bigger names.
by WIP stating what they did…they have just made themselves look like idiots…the actual comment that was made regarding them banning traktor has actually been removed off their sites…

ParticipantSo stupid. I agree with many of the comments on the topic that perhaps they should examine who they’re booking as opposed to what they use.
A headliner who “brings heads” can “phone in” a set on CDJs as easily as they can on a laptop.

InactiveGood PR for Traktor! No mentioning of VDJ, Serato et rest.

ParticipantSuch Traktor hate….sigh.
Yes, yes, we know you’re a ‘real DJ’. We know you can use Serato, manually beatmatch, spin on Technics decks, CDJs, or a Fisher Price children’s turntable.
That’s great. Respect where respect is due.
But for people to be such dicks about a piece of software that can do so much for what amounts to such a minimal cost in comparison to other equipment/software? I think Phil once said that it is built like a flight deck, and that’s pretty accurate.
It might not be the most intuitive or user friendly, but the fact remains that you can do some pretty amazing stuff with it.

ParticipantI find it funny that software like Ableton wasn’t mentioned. I remember when some prominent DJs started using this instead of deckss and there was a big outrage about “Ableton DJs”.

InactiveIf people complain about sync, Ableton Live’s pre-warped sync perfect tracks are even beyond sync as they could be tuned down to microsecond accuracy even with live non-click drum tracks.
Anyway, for me this whole sync/no-sync thing is silly. I learned to DJ with Technics turntables ages ago and the whole mix-sync part for me was as exciting as brushing the teeth.

ParticipantJust read the article….. hahah, I can’t believe they have actually came out and said this!
I DJ with Traktor and I also DJ with a Pioneer CDJ setup. Sometimes I even combine the both via Traktor scratch.
This just makes no sense to me at all, it has to be a publicity stunt, and if it is, then it is working…..as they say “no publicity is bad publicity”. I mean some of the biggest names in the industry use Traktor.

ParticipantPersonnally I have no problem with a club specifying what equpment can be used, it just like a club stating what genre of music to play. As a DJ you have the same 2 choices with any venue; take it or leave it.
December 11, 2012 at 12:22 pm #33449DJ Yaka
ParticipantI agree with you on that Si, just think it’s a bit weird how they have targeted Traktor and no other software

InactiveTo be fair, using Traktor/Ableton Live et rest lowers the barrier for DJ:ing. Means that DJs have to step up one level instead of playing tracks next to each other with the sync button enabled. Otherwise we will drown in mediocre DJ sets.
