ModeratorInteresting question Diego. Especially if the top of your jogwheels are capacitive, regular gloves might not work. I know there are some special gloves that allow you to use an ipad or smartphone, those might work. Or a pair of Airforce surplus store gloves (the green/grey ones). Not super warm, but better than nothing and with very good tactile feedback.
I am slightly more worried about the gear though. Electronics don’t particularly like freezing cold and modern electronics don’t get real hot anymore. Even more worrisome is the LCD screens on laptop and other gear. As the word says “Liquid Crystal Display”, the crystals are liquid and liquids can freeze. I have seen screens go bust in freezing temperatures. Probably not a -4 C, but still something to watch.
How about getting one of those heater/blower thingies. Stick it on a table next to you and aim it at your gear and hands?

ParticipantDear Dj Vintage,
thank you for the kind answer and to adding an important topic to the conversation.Last year I did not care too much about the equipment, but I had an old controller… right now I have a DDJ-SX and I’m not willing to risk and break it because of the cold.
The manual says:
Operating environment temperature and humidity: +5 °C to +35 °C (+41 °F to +95 °F); less than 85 %RH (cooling vents not blocked)At this point a heater it’s mandatory! I’m thinking about something like that rather than a heat blower:

For the laptop: I already had a frozen LDC :/ I left my laptop in the car (all night!!!) and that created a big problem because the screen was visually compromised (black/white with crystals rainbow colors on it)… but only temporarily. After half hour at room temperature it started working again.
That was the fast solution but the best option it’s to wait 2-3 hours to let the humidity go out… that it’s impossible sometimes when you have a gig, so in winter it’s better to not leave the equipment in the car, also if you’re really tired like myself that night hehe 🙂My strategy: I use the laptop for some time at home before turn it off and put it in the bag. When I arrive to the destination I start it right away so it will keep the warm by itself. Last year it worked.
I have not thought about the fact that the jogs are touch sensitive. At this point, due to the fact that a heater it’s mandatory to not compromise the equipment, I think I’ll buy some half finger gloves (cycling style) just to protect the hands a litte bit more. Touch sensitive gloves are normally made with wool (and silver wire, they are the conductor) and imho are too slippery for the jog wheel and knobs.
I hope that somebody else will add his experience. With a little bit more of research and good tips it can be a good article for the website… especially because many New Year celebrations are in outdoor plaza (or I’m the only one working in the cold???).

ModeratorFor my sake I hope you are LOL, I am not a big cold fan. My NYE parties have always been inside LOL.
I like that kind of heater, it’s highly effective, just be careful before you starting pumping your arm in the air, 😀
As for gloves, the biking kind seems good and there are winter biking/sailing gloves, much thicker (neoprene often) that you can easily cut the tips out of.
I say be sure to shoot a few pictures and get back to us with those and a short tale of winter wonder DJ land when it’s done!

ParticipantI have a pair of North face e tip gloves
thin but warm like a neoprene almost and designed to work on phones so should work on the platters. They have grip on the fingers so should not be a problem djing in although i have not tried. Maybe worth a look though
Cheers

ParticipantThank you Rory Jones,
i think they will be the right gloves!
I’ll let you 🙂December 12, 2014 at 2:33 pm #2106571chaosdynasty37@gmail.com
ParticipantIn case that doesn’t work out, maybe the isotoner smartouch gloves might? They are all leather, I have them and they are pretty warm. Never did an outdoor gig before (haven’t had a gig yet actually) but it’s at least another option.

ParticipantHi everybody,
the North Face Etip Gloves are imho the best! I tried others gloves available in the shop (like adidas and others brands) but they had problems using the smartphone (I din’t have my ddj with me hehe). With the NF Etips every finger was touch screen compatible, not only the tip but also the rest of the finger.
@Jessi: I didn’t find the isotoner.Everything went fine on the new year’s eve with the heater on all night, no problem with the laptop or the ddj-sx.
The girl who was with me had a little problem with her electronic piano, very strange! She needed to reboot it, but just one time so there is no warranty that it was for the cold!
Have a great year! 🙂
