All of the things you mentioned will help you break into a scene. Take a look at the articles on the blog about promoting yourself. There is a wealth of information available. I am sure some of the veterans will chime in. But your plan looks good. Patience is the key…and network your ass off. Good luck and keep us all posted.

If you like top 40 and can beatmatch your already better than most top 40 dj’s, so a gig in a small to medium venue won’t be hard, hit up places like casino bars if you have skills, they always have crap dj’s and uneducated crowds who just want a root… I hate top 40 If you can’t tell 😉

Joining the campus radio is a great idea, they are always willing to accept help and you will have a lot of fun. It’s a good plan even if I don’t agree with the destination.

Sounds like a good plan to me….just get yourself out there and see what happens….the more you do the better chance of achieving what you want

Don’t ever apologise for your preferences in music. If someone made it, and someone else recorded it, and yet someone else distributed it, then obviously at least three other people thought it was good too!

To be totally blunt, there have been a few threads with music hate lately, and I’ve been biting my tongue, but it really pisses me off that even in a community such as this, where everyone complains about feeling persecuted for their choices in equipment (just look up all the threads about why don’t people take me seriously without a pair of CDJ’s) they then turn around and crap all over top 40 dj’s as no talent hacks and whatnot. Basically, they do exactly what they complain about others doing to them – just over music instead of equipment. I’ve been spinning mainstream music for close to 20 years, made very good coin doing it, had a lot of fun, and yet still have talents and skills to compete head to head with anybody on this forum who thinks they are “all that”.

Anyway, that’s the end of my tangent.

And more to your actual question – your plan is excellent. Have at it!

It’s based on my experience of being dragged along to commercial clubs when i was an apprentice chef as that is where all the girls are. It was always train wreck city but the crowd, the staff and the manager don’t care as long as they hear flo rida and christina every 2 hours. Sorry but underground crowds are generally less slutty “guys are sluts too” and more involved in the scene than top 40. There was also pretty much a fight every couple of hours either in or out of the clubs, never have I seen a fight erupt in an underground club as everyone knows each other and are usually welcoming to sincere new comers..

Completely understand your point my friend! It was more of a joke anyway man haha, but I do see a lot of hatred towards DJ’s who go for the “money slots” of mainstream clubs! I don’t care though, I like top 40 and I’m more than willing to spin it!!

To all others, thanks for the comments and advice. I’m looking forward to getting on the radio and seeing how it pans out! Guess I just need to jump into the deep end and see what happens 🙂

In a nutshell your plan is: I am going to get off my arse and hustle.
This is 90% of getting gigs.
I think your approach is smart and if your passion stays alive, you’ll achieve your goal and beyond, no matter what style you play. Good luck!

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Grafting and getting a bit of luck with who you bump into seems to be the key. I’ll definitely update over the next few weeks when I move into the city to let you guys know how it is going 🙂

Sounds like you’re on the money By the way Todd, “Don’t ever apologise for your preferences in music. Can I steal it for my email newsletter?

Sounds like a really good plan. I did #2 in my uni days, and it worked well for me to get into clubs. Plus you’ll get tons of opportunities to work with a real crowd.
