No, is the short answer. Since you are tech savvy I can explain a bit. There are two components to any electrical connection, one is voltage (USB = 5V), the other amperage. The voltage is dependent on how a power supply is configured/designed which in turn depends on what is supposed to be powered. All USB devices require 5V (its the set standard), but your laptop might need 12-24 volts depending on make and model. The maximum amperage that a supply can deliver is also result of configuration/design and depends on how much power is needed. The big difference is that any 5V supply will always deliver this voltage, the amperage however is based on the DEMAND of the powered device up to the max of the supply.

For USB you can safely say that the regular amperage a USB-port delivers is enough to make it work with powered devices, small unpowered devices (USB sticks and even some hard disks and USB-powered controllers). The more power the connected devices need, the closer it gets to the max capacity of the port.

If you use an unpowered hub, you still have only the amperage the single USB port it’s connected to delivers. If you hook up more gear to the hub, you will sooner hit the limit.

By buying a powered hub, every port on the hub will have it’s own “supply” of power, rather than having to share with neighboring ports. Even so, the ports will never deliver more amperage than the device needs. So no chance of blowing anything that way.

If you were to increase the voltage and connect, say, 12volts instead of 5V, you would definitely blow something. The only way to get a higher voltage on a USB port would be by jailbreaking it or if it is a faulty unit, which is very unlikely to happen (the power adapter with a powered hub is usually dimensioned to only supply 5V and highly unlikely it can suddenly deliver much more).

In conclusion, a powered hub is safe to use, regardless of the connected devices.

    On the lightings/USB end:
Clearly you’d need the camera connection kit, this allows you to use the lightning port as USB port. If you were to hook up a hub it should (theoretically) work correctly. If you then hook up a controller, it should work, just like when you hook up the controller straight to the CCK. However … connecting the CCK you lose the option of charging the device. Regardless of hub or not. So the only reason to use a hub would be if you need to hook up more devices at once, in which case I am not sure if the apps/iOS can handle that.

So, if you just want to connect your MC4000, get the CCK (about 35 euros here) and try it out. You will need to use a freshly charged iPad/iPhone or run the risk of it dying half-gig.

Thank you! That explained everything. My mind is a peace now.
