It can cause people to stop dancing. As a Dj you’ve practiced being able to pick out the two separate vocals in your head and make sense of them. To the average patron, it will just sound jumbled and will probably mess up their rhythm haha

I never mix vocals on one another…not unless it’s looping samples that somehow work together.

Singing/rapping? No. I never even understood when I hear guys play rap music how they just jump around in mid-verse.

People singing on top of each other is just about as rude as people talking through each other.

Another more technical reason is that vocals happen roughly in the 2 to 4 KHz area. Engineers take lot’s of care to clean up that frequency band to bring out the vocals and not have them “drown” in the mix. Mixing in another set of vocals therefor usually almost doubles the energy in that frequency range, which throws off the total balance of each track individually and of the combined sound.

So, listen to the old hacks around here … don’t mix vocals on vocals!

I appreciate the insight from everyone, and I’m not disagreeing with everyone, just asking more questions. Wouldn’t the genre of music be a factor as well? I’m not really mixing much pop. I feel that in electronic music, the vocals take less importance than lead vox with other genres. Also, couldn’t we overcome these issues with proper mixing? I think that DJs could be missing out on great mixing opportunities if they just experiment with making vocals blend right.

    Hey Rudderz,

Those that invent hot new things are the ones that ignore the “rulez” and try what shouldn’t be tried. So go for it.

I guess it is just that we all know it has been tried and tried and tried and in all those years nobody got it to work.

By all means give it your best shot and convince us it can be done and your name will be hallowed forever in DJ circles.

Or we’ll all be giving you the “told ya so” look 🙂

Mixing one vocal to the top of another vocal is bad business…
Especially if its a well known lyrics, and ya know drunks folks tend to be the next Mariah Carey and try to sing along…
