Now there comes my first question… (remember im a total newb): what do i need to look for in the software?? I mean.. i don’t really know where to start.. I dont know if I prefer, for example, VDJ above traktor because of ……?

At the moment i’m trying out VDJ. I got Serato but this only works with hardware so thats no use now i guess. Next step for me is trying the demo mode of traktor.

I’ve already downloaded the 162 page pdf with midi controllers and checking them out ass well. Was first thinking of the Numark mixtrack Pro, but also cam across these two:

    and

Would love to buy the NI traktor s2, but think this is out of my league and also a too big of an investment for a first midi controller.

    any suggestions for hardware??

Hope u guys could give me some advice. I would more then appreciate it!!! Will try to post some updates on how things are going for me.

The one that suit your needs.

Seriously what genre of music will you play, do you like a wide range of FX, use of sampler, loops, scratch, mix one after the other or do mash up, then do hands on practice at a store. All controllers come with a version of a software (lite or full) just do some test and see what you like better. Befriend somebody at the store, let him know that you are serious about buying one just need to see which one fit you. That’s what I did before and tested a few controllers, some for a few days others for a few weeks and bought the mc 6000. By the way I mainly use Traktor but in rare occasions do use VDJ for video and my NS6 will be here this week so I’ll be able to try Itch.

Here’s an easy way I’d look at it…and I’m sure some might disagree, but I’ll say it anyway:

SERATO: Ideal if you are looking to go into timecode and want things simple. I notice most vinyl purists who aren’t into the effects/sample banks/technology prefer Serato’s simplicity. The upside is it’s very stable and works well for PC and Mac users. The downside is you’re often married to only their hardware in terms of timecode and/or midi controls.

TRAKTOR: This is probably the more popular title nowadays, and it’s even where I went now. Traktor is versatile where you could go “simple” like you do on Serato or get complex like you see others do with sampling and effects. The upside is you get a wider array of possible options on how you want to do your setup in terms of gear. The downside is that sometimes Traktor can get a bit complex for many, and there is no video support. So if you want to play videos, this one isn’t for you.

VIRTUAL DJ: Virtual DJ does boast the largest user base. I was torn between VDJ and Traktor to be honest. VDJ has an easier setup and workings, it handles video, and the new 8th Edition will offer some very cool new features not really found on the others. The downside is you won’t quickly and easily find “dedicated gear”, if that’s important to you. However, this is changing.

So what’s your dream? Midi? Turntable? CDJ? What kinds of music do you like to play? Do you like scratching and tricking with the decks? Or push buttons and other technology?

vdj natively supports everything on this list:

here is one with pretty pictures and if it has a vdj le logo that means it comes with vdj:
    http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html

I say vdj because the core of the program has none of the limitations traktor has, every midi or HID controller can be supported with full resolution and features be they touchpads, jogs, motorised platters, RGB leds etc… and that seems to be the current direction of the controller industry.

The thing that vdj lacks is intigration of all the possibilities but they are there and accessable by all, and using the script options you can put djtt mappings to shame. The last thing is the skin looks a bit crap but you can make your own if you are graphically inclined, and no one knows yet what the skin will look like on release of vdj8…

@atom12v: Mostly i’m going to play techno – minimal – techhouse – acid – electro and maybe a little bit house. I would love to use sample, loops, scratch, mix one after the other and maybe after a while even try to do some mash up. My favourite DJ is Dave Clarke, his style is something I look up to. But for example also love Laurent Garnier because of his wide range of music choice (and ofcourse skills). I dont want to mess TO much with songs, but when i do i want it to be at the right time. (DUH)

About the store advice. I agree with u there. Only it’s hard to find a good store that sells this stuff, but i’m going to look for it and hope i can test the gear out. I’ve already looked one up: http://muziek.marktplaats.nl/dj-sets-en-draaitafels/1001555762-native-instruments-traktor-kontrol-s2-uit-doos-geweest.html 345 euro for s2 with 2 year warranty. controller only been out of the box for a demo. maybe i can try it out at this store.

@D-Jam: Thanks for this simple but (atleast for me) effective explanation. I also spoken to some friends who are DJ’s and this information pretty much confirmed my thinking. One friend of mine uses the traktor s4 midi controller. Soon i’m going to see him and he will try to explain the traktor software and the s4. At first i said that maybe the traktor s2 is out of my league but im thinking that buying that wont be a bad deal…. I rather put some more money on the table to make sure im absolutely satisfied with my software + hardware.

@synthet1c: Thank for clearing out about VDJ. At the moment i’m using this software so will see how it goes. Also thank u for the usefull links. But when u talk about motorised platters, rgb leds, script options and djtt mappings i really have no clue… hahaha. I dont know why but at this moment i think tractor is the most suited software for me because of the opinions of friends and when i am looking at forums like these most of the people are using traktor and are really happy with it. But i’m trying to be open minded and going to try out VDJ and traktor right now to see what suits me.

THANKS AGAIN GUYS FOR YOUR REPLIES!! REALLY HELPFULL!!! 🙂
