ParticipantI would say the Numark N4 because Numark has a bit better quality in their components than American Audio IMO.

Memberi feel the same way about that

ParticipantI went through the same battle between the two and decided on the N4. I researched both and was never able to find a full review of the VMS whereas I found a few for the N4 which were all favorable. I’ve had it for two weeks now and am loving it.

Participantim thinking about the n4. i had the original vms4,and we all know the problems with that, so i got a vms2 and a friend of mine got a vms4.1 i like BOTH systems as they are a vast improvement over the original. the ONLY thing stopping me from getting a n4 is the fact that its all plastic. i had a mixtrack pro and it didnt hold up to heavy gigging.but heres my look at the 4.1 and the 2

ParticipantIceman, did you mean to add a link?
Yes, the N4 is plastic which, so far, is the only downside for me as well. Fortunately it doesn’t feel as plastic as it looks (and with the black, reflective surfacing Numark’s put on it, it doesn’t even look all that bad). But yes, thinking back on it, the primary reason I was considering the VMS over the N4 was because the metal VMS just seemed to look (and I imagine, feel) so much better. I prefer heavier controllers as well so the ~20 lb. VMS sounded really good. Otherwise though, I couldn’t be more certain that I made the right decision by choosing the N4.February 16, 2012 at 10:31 pm #15103Bigicedog

ParticipantSo far (meaning the past two weeks) I’ve been primarily using Virtual DJ LE that came with the N4. I tried Serato Intro that also comes with the N4 and it’s got some nice features and I think I like the mapping better but it doesn’t have 4-deck capability which is the whole reason I got the N4.
The VDJ LE latency is noticable but only if you’re scratching. In just my normal use, I’ve never had any issues. The VDJ and Serato I’m using are just the light versions the controller came with though, not the upgrades. If you’re using pro versions of either one, you may have better experiences. Neither one is bad though. The Numark site has got an N4 mapping for Traktor Pro 2 as well if you’re a Traktor userFebruary 17, 2012 at 5:06 am #15110synthet1c
Memberif you upgrade to vdj pro you can download the “registry tool” and change the feel of the jog when scratching, for much tighter performance.

its funny i have the tool too(i guess im gonna have to sit down and learn how to use it)

Memberjust open it when vdj is closed, then change the default scratch latency to at or below 1020. if the op doesn’t have the tool, i think i can be done manually, I tried to find where to do it but unfortunately couldn’t find it, and beware changing the registry can kill your computer, not just the program but the whole operating system, so be extremely careful.

this is from the wiki
DefaultScratchLatency: (By default 2205 samples = 5ms)
Latency of the scratch.
If you get a value smaller than the audio buffer latency, it will use the audio buffer latency anyway.
So if you put 78 (or 1), it’s like putting 512 (or whatever your audio-buffers are).
But to keep a “good” sound, the DefaultScratchLatency is supposed to be kept bigger than 2 times the maximum delay between two MIDI (or HID or mouse) messages.
That’s why the default has to be kept big.EDIT ———————————————————————————–
actually I just googled where it is located and it’s incredibly easy to modify the registry values.
just open the start menu, then type “regedit” in the search box…then once you okay the security, you need to open the filepath to virtual dj, shown down the bottom of the image. when you locate DefaultscratchLatency double click it
then finally when you have double clicked it will open a window, first change the value to decimal, then enter the latency you desire. mine is actually set to 960, this is just to show you guys what was recommended by cstollthis was done on a 32bit windows 7 starter netbook, i can’t imagine it would be any different on any other windows OS

thank you. i just downloaded and installed the tool so now im gonna pick your brain a little LOL. what would be the recommended crossfader settings?
February 17, 2012 at 5:30 pm #15151synthet1c
MemberI don’t use the crossfader to mix only for scratching, so I have it set to scratch, but you can code your own curve if you need to, what you are doing is telling vdj where the volume for the decks will be a position of the crossfader.
purple is the position of the crossfader
blue is the left decks volume
red is the right decks volume0=[1,0]
0.5=[1,1]
1=[0,1]this is a standard curve where both tracks are equal in the middle
crossfader_curve “0=[1,0]/0.5=[1,1]/1=[0,1]”if you want a long curve that only max’s out at either end and dips slightly in the middle you could do something like this (personally i think if you are going to use the crossfader for ixing this is the best setting.
crossfader_curve “0=[1,0]/0.5=[0.9,0.9]/1=[0,1]”or if you want a sharp cut you could use something like this
crossfader_curve “0=[1,0]/2.5=[1,1]/7.5=[1,1]/1=[0,1]”and finally if you want a scratch cut you could use this
crossfader_curve “0=[1,0]/0.1=[1,1]/9.9=[1,1]/1=[0,1]”So in vdj you can have any crossfader curve that you like as there is no restrictions, but you need vdj pro to be able to map the curve, or you can just use the standard options in the config menu, the choice is yours.
Also with the regedit thing i posted you don’t actually need to use the “registry tool” from the vdj website, so everyone even LE users can have better performance from their scratching just like itch. Although I don’t have LE to test so I would be interested in hearing if it works.

I actually figured it out in the reg editor i just decreased the curve by 100 point increments till i found what i liked.

Memberthe n4 and made of plastic that made me discouraged
vms4.1 is made of metal giving the impression that the durability is higher than N4
The question remains, my friends what I buy?
help me please!!!
