The s4 will run a balanced sm58 no problem. (I have both).

To note you need a balanced TSR to XLR cable. The mics are not balanced. Also avoid any condenser mics with 48V Phantom power as S4 can’t handle those.

Basically me thinks the best approach is to get an audio interface if you want or need to experiment with different mics. Or just get a good cardoid mic, people say Shure SM57 but you could actually find even better ones like the Electro Voice ones if you avoid the hype. I like The AT200 or 4000 series of mics for voice recording but I need it for singer recordings and so on.

    Thanks for the answers.

if you want or need to experiment with different mics

I’m trying to avoid too much experimentation to save $$$. Using a prosumer microphone designed for cameras seems like a good multi-function solution: plug it into my camera for better sound on my videos, plug it in to the S4 for a bit of VO on my podcast mixes. . . . . but it seems too good to be true.

Kent: If I understand you correctly (and based on my rusty audio production experience) the TSR on the camera mic will require a converter cable or audio interface to make it a balanced outuput before putting it into my S4. If I use a TSR microphone with unbalanced output, I risk all sorts of nasty audio hum and noise. Correct?

Microphone XLR outputs are balanced so the XRL to TSR cable will keep the three + ground cables in place so yes it should be fine when you hook it into S4 via a such balanced cable. As for cameras and such, I doubt they have balanced inputs so you won’t get that.
