Humm, wonder what is the root cause of that. How big a difference in bpm (%-wise) do you mix apart?

The bigger the pitch shift the more work the player has to do. And it can come to the point where it becomes pretty ugly.

Another thing, since you are mentioning synths and pads, is that these instruments can produce pretty “unnatural” waveforms. But I am just venting a few thoughts here, nothing from experience.

I have two SC2900s and haven’t noticed such a thing. Can you give me two tracks that always do that on your 1200s and 1 or 2 tracks that definitely don’t do it and I’ll play them on my SC2900s and see what happens. Perhaps I can hook up a recorder and tape the sound coming out of the main or record out of the mixer and send it back to you? Would that be helpful?

I think the processing power in the 2900s is way beyond what was ever in the 1200s and the sound cards inside them are awesome, as are the ones in my X1600 mixer (Traktor Scratch certified).

Good to meet another long time Denon afficionado :). You don’t want to switch to Pioneer, LOL. If you are used to Denon quality at Denon prices, your are gonna feel so … mmm … what is the politically correct word … just fill in the blank … when you switch to the “big” Pioneer tickets at almost twice the price.

I recorded 3 different parts of the song 16 Days by West.K. It’s a track I bought from beatport.com and is a 320kbps mp3. The recording is about 60 seconds.

First part is at 0%, second is -2%, and third is -2% with key lock. You can hear a huge difference on the third part.

If you try it out and let me know how it sounds on your 2900 that would be a tremendous help. No need to record it unless you want to. I think the 1200s just don’t have a strong enough sound card to process the information.

    Thanks so much!

I don’t think the sound card processes the key pitch, this (my understanding) is done by the actual processor of the mediaplayer. Usually ASICs (application specific Integrated Circuits) in older equipment. In newer equipment you see more “general” processors running Linux adaptations for example. My old Numark D2 Director for example was running a Numark linux version.

I think that only the processed audio (i.e. after pitch) is offered as input for the sound card and the sound card does the same with any signal (pitched or non-pitched) which is translate digital pulses to analogue waveforms. And garbage in means garbage out. Hence my guess that it is not the sound card at fault. Every 16-bit 44K1 sound card should do just fine, really.

Ok. Will give it a try. 2% does not sound as enough of a pitch correction to cause problems on my SC2900s. Will look at it this weekend and let you know.

Adjusting pitch with keylock will result in the choppiness/distortion you speak of. It’s most noticeable for me with pitch shifts of 5+ bpm (70-135) or 10+ (140+ bpm). The dj software struggles to adjust the tempo wile reproducing the same sounds. I play a lot of bass heavy music (dubstep, trap, d&b etc) and have experienced the same problem.

My solution was to stop using keylock for electronic music. For hip hop and other more conventional genres, I still use keylock from time to time as the tempos of the tracks are all over the place. There was an article referenced here or on dj tech tools that argued that no one should use keylock as it will degrade the sound quality. If you turn up the volume or have big speakers you can hear the bass stuttering on my most recent mix on soundcloud. I recorded it back in November and since January I stopped using keylock for my electronic music sets.

I bought a pair of Denon SC2900 players and they’re great! The choppiness however is still there with the key lock on but in Traktor Pro the sound is fine. I guess that software process audio better than the players. I wonder if it sounds the same on Pioneer decks.
