If you just want to “experiment” with software, then start with REAPER. It is a relatively simple “free” DAW which will cover all of your needs and will give you enough to make your tracks.

If you’re still set on Ableton (which is a great software, I use it too!), then I recommend you buy a MIDI controller that comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite. That will give you a taste of Ableton, and even if you don’t like it, you can still use it in your current setup. Unless you are using Serato DJ.
