ParticipantOK, losseless is more difficult for these types of genres although traxsource.com and even beatport have and are improving on these genres, also try whatpeopleplay and possibly clone.nl, although they may be geared more towards techno but they also like there disco and related. İt depends on how ‘underground’ or commercial it is i guess. Quite frankly İ can keep up with the number of new online stores opening.

Participantonce and if the pricing issue is fixed i would seriously consider apple, i too prefer lossless but after playing some apple files recently i was pleasantly suprised with the sound quality. There is so much music that is ONLY available in itunes that it is worth buying regardless of the 1-2 dollar price difference.

InactiveUsually iTunes purchases are far cheaper than chasing down various seventies/eighties tracks via online CD stores and so on… I would not worry about the WAV versus M4a issue as a lot of seventies productions were not exactly hi-fi. Now, eighties, that’s another story — me thinks the SSL based UK productions in the eighties might be the zenith of sound ever done in a studio.

MemberHi,
There are a bunch of online stores that do various reissues and compilations for download i.e.
Juno – They will have a mix of mainstream classics and underground comps and reissues
Boomkat – Mainly underground comps and reissues
Discogs – They mainly sell CDs and records, but have a growing MP3 selection of this music.Your next best bet is to hit second hand CD stores and grab compilations for cheap and rip them yourself.
Also there are loads of blogs that upload vinyl rips of this music. If you can be more specific I can point to you ones you might like.

ParticipantThat’s tough. Outside of Amazon and iTunes, i have now clue.
Pretty much all my old new wave and disco were from old vinyls. Beatport and Traxsource does get many house classics though.

ParticipantYeah, even iTunes has some pretty big gaps in 80’s dance. To me Blancmange is a pretty good indicator of a store’s 80s selection: a bit obscure, but not that obscure. Blancmange had a few UK Top10 synth-pop hits, and released several LP’s on a major-label.
On iTunes you can only find Blancmange tracks that show up on compilations. None of their albums or extended versions of their classic hits on iTunes.
My 80’s shopping is hopping between iTunes, Amazon, with Juno a distant 3rd. You can find tons of 80s stuff on dubious Russian grey-market MP3 sites, but the sound quality is crap, the files are clipped, and the overall hassle more than offsets the cheap price.
I’d love to hear other suggestions. Not sure if 70s dance is better. There’s more nostalgia for classic funk and disco.

I am pretty much in the same boat. All the ones where the vinyl was in to bad shape to rip I bought back via iTunes…

Awesome, TR, thanks for the tips. An example of new wave track I’m desperate to get is Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus
