KeymasterThe thing is: You need to make you and your style somehow unique to stand out.
There have been lots of people calling themselves dead mouse. But Deadmau5 is different, he has a certain lightshow and his head.
Now having a more unique DJ name does help a bit, e.g. I get constantly asked “well Terry is prolly your name, but why 42?” and this gets the ice broken. But it is not necessary, if you can pull this off any other way.
I know a DJ MasterChief, Cypher and Terror in my town. All 3 names that have been copied over and over, but still those 3 are very successful all over Austria and Germany. They have special flyers, special fonts to display their name etc. to make them stand out.February 16, 2013 at 5:12 pm #36834DJ Skittles
MemberMy DJ name is DJ Skittles. If you google DJ Skittles, you will get a underground house DJ in San Francisco, a Deep House DJ in Chicago, and nYc Music Mixers DJ from New York, a Club promoter in Baltimore, and me in Utah as well as countless others. That being said, the reason I have the name “DJ Skittles” is because “Skittles” has been my nickname for 5+ years now. You shouldn’t necessarily worry about everyone else who might have your name, but rather if that name describes you personally. Thats how people close to you and people in your area will know you. No reason to boot the name simply because its close to someone elses

Participantat first I wanted DJ Chopin, but it was taken. Then I went for DJ NietZsche, also taken. I took the Polish variant of the surname Nietzsche (which looks a lot like Netsky but sounds different) and success. There are a few Nietzsky’s who are blog, but no djs/musicians =D

ParticipantSo in the instance of there being several DJ Skittles, will that pose a trademark infringement threat even if the DJ’s are in cities/towns across the country?
February 16, 2013 at 7:16 pm #36838DJ Vintage
ModeratorNot unless they registered their DJ name as a trademark, which most won’t have done. I think it would be a mistake to try going by Tiesto, Afrojack or Armin van Buuren thouhg 🙂

MemberAlso, adding on to the previous question, would i pose trademark infringement to the brand Skittles?
March 5, 2013 at 7:33 pm #37622DJ Vintage
ModeratorGood question. If it is a registered trademark, which I assume it is, I would think that you are not allowed to use the name unless you have acquired written prior permission. As with all things, if you are a small fish they might not mind or even notice. However, if you DO become world famous, then they are sure to notice and might take offense.
I know there are more DJ Vintage’s in the world, but they are in the US and since I have no plans whatsoever to promote myself there, I don’t see any big problems in the future. But it could already get tricky if another DJ Vintage started posting on this forum under that name for instance. Not because of trademark/copyright reasons, but just simple things as confusion amongst readers and who knows, potential bookers/promoters. That is why I incorporate my full name in my pay off.
In this world of internet it is getting more and more difficult to find a unique name.
So, sometimes you accept that someone else somewhere else in the world might be using the same name. If you play the local or regional scene, that shouldn’t be a big problem.
Still an interesting topic.

MemberDj Armin van Buuren who the heck is he – if you want to be differnt, use your own cool, unique name!
Waste of time, worrying about a name, promote yourself, hone your skills, use this time to gain knowledge, get out to see whats happening in your market, make connections. Trust me, know one is going to hire Dj I’mthebestthingsinceslicedbread , but only in this case they will remember your name.
