Only in the worlds of hip hop, breaks, and EDM is there such contention about what a DJ is. For instance, in salsa, blues, and swing dance communities, it is not uncommon to have a “DJ contest” where people will come to the venue with a playlist on their ipod to play music that night and modify the list based on how the crowd reacts during their hour-long “DJ” slot. This is the most important part of DJing: making people dance, keeping everyone happy, and maintaining the energy of the party.
