Ugh, this is why I hate private parties. For private parties I do book, I always frame the agreement like this at the time of signing — give me a list of five songs you love and five songs you hate. It discourages them from providing huge lists, but it lets them communicate what they do and don’t like so I get a better sense heading in…

As with many mobile gigs… go with it. You are there to entertain them and they obviously want to hear that music.
What I do is I spice it up with songs they did not expect or remixes they have not heard, with some fancy mixing and F/X or in the case of your hip hop you can easily do some mashups and scratches live too.
You can still have fun and play music they want. You are their to play for them, not to enjoy yourself when it comes to that or you are in the wrong business.

Look at it as a challenge rather than an obstacle. Your job is to come up with a sequence and mix these songs together smoothly. Maybe it’s not the job you’re used to but it should still be within your skill set. Unfortunately if you’re not comfortable and familiar with all these songs and artist you will need to spend some time listening and researching the songs, you should bill them a few more hours for the customized set list.

Todd – That’s basically what I did on the phone when he initially booked me. He said he’d provide a list and I told him that wasn’t necessary, that he could just provide a few songs and that I could create a great playlist. I explained that part of my value was saving him the work of making a playlist. I guess his idea of “a few” was slightly different than mine…or he just ignored me.

Terry – no arguments there. As a mobile DJ I know it’s all about their tastes not mine. The issue is, my audience isn’t the ONE person that is paying me, it’s also all of their friends/family at the event. While the person cutting the check is your client and the most important, all of the other people are “potential clients.” The problem is, they won’t know I’m playing a set of reuqests, they’ll just wonder why the hell I’m playing Linger by The Cranberries when it’s an awful party song. A good mobile DJ gets a lot of business by word-of-mouth and from people who were at an event you played. A prescribed list ties my hands and hurts how I look to those people. As far as scratching and FX… This isn’t a club, most people want to hear the songs as they remember them so they can drunkenly sing along. I’ve found that using effects or scratching more than very sparingly creates an annoyed response at private events. (“Just play the song!”) I typically stick with remixes that minimally alter the track, just enough to make them more mixable and/or danceable.

Scotto – My familiarity with the songs isn’t at issue. It just severely limits my flexibility to adjust to the crowd. The client here assumes that (1) the “old people” will miraculously disappear at 7pm, and (2) that they have no interest in dancing. Therefore, he wants me to switch wholesale to rap and Top 40 at 7pm (except for that Cranberries track…???). I bet his baby boomer guests wouldn’t mind some Motown mixed in there, for example. Hopefully there’s enough time to mix it in.

That is easily solved. Most mobile DJs have a microphone 🙂 (I know I have) and I simply announce: Hey boys and gals I am Terry 42 “Bob” here gave me a list of songs he loves and I love to play what people like, so I am going to flow with his requests, if you like something different to be played let me know and we spice things up. I have these small yellow stickies and some sharpies lying here on this desk, so put your requests on there and stick em on my screen (I have a screen to guard me from the people). I am no jukebox but I will eventually get to your requests and mix them in, HAVE FUN.

Or if this is not your style: If you empty the dancefloor with his crap, then you play something else and if he comes asking you simply say: Look I really want to play your stuff, but I emptied the dancefloor 3 times and had to change it up, is that OK with you?
