Anything else I can do to mitigate this problem? Like I said, all I’ve done so far is switched the user account on my laptop. Hasn’t crashed again, but I’d like to do everything I can now, rather than later after it’s crashed in the middle of a set.

MemberI have tried a number of different software, but now I stick to Traktor Pro 2 due to the seamlessness it has to my controller. Also great effects that suit my style well!

ParticipantTraktor Pro. But looking to upgrade to Traktor Pro 2 in a few months.

MemberTraktor 2 for me! It’s the effects and cuepoints that sucked me in.

ParticipantIllinoize, you said “Happens sometimes, only when I’m selecting a different effect.” I’m no computer guru, but that sounds like your CPU is being taxed. Too much work for it to handle while you are using that particular user account.
What can you do? I would try eliminating needless processes and services in the Task Manager: Anti-Virus, Bluetooth, Updates, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, DVD-Burners, Roxio, iTunes Helper (only if you don’t use iTunes), etc… I turn everything I can off. I try not to turn off stuff that is necessary for windows, like services.exe. This is going to take some homework on your part.
The bottom line is two-fold:
1) You want your PC’s resources to be dedicated to only running the DJ software, as much as possible. You don’t want to be checking e-mail when you are at a gig.
2) You want to optimize your PC’s settings so it is condusive to glitchless audio playback. What does the second mean? It means adjusting your PC’s settings so that it is easy for the DJ software to reproduce the audio and changes to the audio being reproduced; i.e. pitch bends, pitch changes, effects, samples, GUI or skin changes.
I’m waiting for an article on Windows 7 Optimization for Audio. I remember there was an article here on digitaldjtips.com, “PC vs. MAC” I think, where this one commenter promised Phil he was going to post an optimization. I hope it’s still in the works. It would be really cool to see a Windows 7 Audio Optimization guide, specifically tailored to laptop DJ’ing.
I apologize for hijacking this thread 🙂

Funnily enough I was speaking to one of our writers about this today, it’s coming soon. We did have an article on its way about this but it got waylaid.

MemberStarted with VDJ, but now using Serato ITCH. I am happy with both of them. Each has its own’s plus and minus, eg: I love Serato’s coloured waveforms a lot, but I miss the effects and samples I can thrown in from VDJ.

MemberStarted with the copy of Traktor 3 LE that came with my BCD3000. When I was made redundant at the beginning of 2009 I used some of the redundancy pay to upgrade to Traktor Pro, mostly so that I could customise the controller layout to my own liking.

ParticipantI’m using Virtual DJ, Practicing on Traktor 2 and Torq ^___^
for Producing/Remixing, I’m using FL Studio, Acid Pro and Adobe AuditionJuly 1, 2011 at 2:24 pm #2264Kyle_G
ParticipantI would use Traktor just to mess around but I don’t think I would use it live, and Ableton is more for my studio mixes so I have maximum control over them.

Sometimes best to completely reinstall the operating system and have a minimal setup to ensure nothing degrades the performance of your mixing software.

MemberSold / gave to freinds all my vinyl years ago, had a lot of it ripped with audicity for listening in the van or cars SD card stereo.
Started on VJD home as i had all these tracks lying around, i was really really pants so gave up and deleted it for a few month till i thought ” Right i can do this with vinyl so why not digitally”
Downloaded home VDJ again played about for a bit until it became fairly nailed on.
I then split the decks with 2 soundcards through an analogue mixer. Riiiiight now were getting somewhere! The Mixer meant i could monitor as i could with vinyl, and gave a hands on tactile confidence boost
Went through downloading the upgrades of Virtual DJ, tried and still have Traktor, but in truth i hate the “Locked” feeling that the Beatgrids and Synch give in Traktor
I mainly use Virtual DJ pro 7 now, Traktor is just there ’cause i’ve paid for it and i’m too stubborn to delete itJuly 5, 2011 at 7:35 am #2894U31
MemberIllnoize, what OS are you using? I always Dual boot laptops now, windows 7 for main duties and XP for DJ work, and ONLY dj work.
Id ditch Vista on general principle for being total pants… I once retrograded a Compaq presario to XP ( Just before the Beta release of 7) even though it was built specifically for Vista and Compaq provided no driver support for XP whatsoever… it was a nightmare getting it to run well but it was worth it
