Good to hear you are getting the hang of it. Even better to see you have made some very solid decisions. I promise you will never be in trouble on WHATEVER gear you’ll be faced with now you know this skill. Going from controller to CDJs will be a piece of cake.

And you won’t be accused of the Serato Stare, LOL.

I personally think that any workflow that works for YOU is the right one, so the L/R deck thing sounds good to me. From experience I know that down the road you’ll be nudging both decks either way, but that’s for a later time.

Again, there is nothing bad either way. Most DJ’s I know won’t use both sides of the headphones. But I can see how it would be helpful for a quick check. Best practice in my case is listen to a booth speaker (this is a must if the speakers are more than a few yards away from you and especially if they are facing away from you). If you don’t have a booth speaker, then you’ll have to do it all in your headphones. In that case make sure that the cue/master balance knob is set to a level so you hear the master and the cue signal about equally loud (or wherever you want it to be to sound right to you).

If you DO have a booth speaker or your PA speakers are so close you can hear them well without any delay, then most people I know will have one ear in the headphones (the side away from the booth speaker) and the other listening to the booth speaker. They will cue it up like that and will do the same thing while the actual transition is in progress.

Again, if it works with a quick listen in the headphones for you, go ahead. The drawback to that is having to fiddle with knobs (moving from pure cue signal to the right cue/master balance and back), but if you don’t mind … 😀

Oh, ok … yes, makes sense. Again, the cue/master knob at the right position and off you go. The reason why I say use both sides of the headphone in that case, is that you are not distracted by outside sounds, including the master PA.

What are you using the iDJ Pro with? DJAY II? I have been using it lately with DJ Player. Which is just an awesome piece of DJ App. VERY full-featured. Needs a bit of a learning curve, but once you have it mastered, it makes DJAY look like kindergarten DJ-ing. DJ Player has a native mapping for the iDJ Pro, so no problems there either.

Luckily you can download the pdf starters guide which is mighty helpful. I am not sure what the price model is these days, I got it as a one-shot payment (not cheap, but worth it). I know they changed it afterwards. Not sure what the in-app purchases are now.

I never had any sound problems. I am assuming you have the latest firmware installed (this is done through the DJAY app). Knowing Gabor, you’ll be answered pretty soon. He’s good like that.

I have chosen to beatmatch my ear and avoid using the sync function. My reason for this is that as I’ve found out, sync does not always work and I was spending too much time adjusting down beats and not knowing where I was in the track.

Smart man. I’ve not held back that I used sync and love it…but I’ll never fully trust it. Even now on an old school rave mix I’m working on, there are tunes that simply do not align well, so I go old school and manual it. It’s a great skill to know.

I will say though not to fall into the “sync is cheating” trap. It’s merely a tool to make your life easier, which is the goal of any technology. Go at it any way you want, but don’t feel you “must” go manual.

I now know before bringing the next track in whether or not it’s bang in time or drifting after a while. If it’s drifting a little I set it so the left deck I will alway slow and the right speed up. That way I’m always on the outside of the jog wheel. Whether this is how you pro’s do it I don’t know but it works great for me.

There is no right or wrong. You do what works best for you. Some like to ride the pitch, others use the side of the jogwheel, and others use the + and – pitch bend buttons. I think it’s great to have options.
