The inputs on the back of controllers are usually for additional controllers which are powered from it, or for turntables or CDJs which are routed through its soundcard. Most controllers with inputs are all-in-one types or mixers.

    Howdy folks,

I don’t know what controllers have extra (USB) inputs to power other connected controllers to be honest, so please let me know. I am always ready and willing to learn.

Hooking up extra (analogue) sound sources is indeed what the input section is for. Some controllers are also full stand-alone mixers (like the Denon MC6000/MC3000) so external sound sources are treated just like they would be in a regular analogue (DJ) mixer. Other controllers do indeed route the sound to the computer/software where it can be manipulated in the same manner and gets sent back through the controllers soundcard.

Many controllers will have only one input (often 3,5mm mini-jack with it’s own rotarty volume knob) as a back-up plan. Let’s say your laptop crashes/freezes/stops for any reason and you have your iPad/iPod/iPhone hooked up to the aux input, you can quickly switch to something on there while you sort out the laptop.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input Chuck….    I was sondering basically the same thing.   The controllers that are USB powered would black out when the power cycles or goes off on the laptop I’m assuming, in the case of a restart…. but in most cases this would still be OK and allow me to leave the CD player and analog mixer out of the setup… might not be an acceptable backup for an important gig like a wedding, but for a small house party it would do…

as far as the other reply above, I’m getting what he meant, picturing a NI Z2 mixer, with USB hub, and an aux input that would be used for another DJ setup, a backup or alt. audio source, etc….    hope my rambling is more a help than hindrance …..     Moonshadow

Good thing is laptops have batteries and will usually run long enough on it to survive a black out. And they will keep the USB powered controller going too.  More worried about a hard disk crashing for example. And that’s not just a theoretical possibility. I work(ed) in IT-related fields for many years and I see and have seen hard-disks crashing and even SSDs just stop working. Not fun.

Even for a house party, you are caught with your pants down :-).

To me, that is the single most important difference to analogue systems, the laptop does too many things and when it breaks down (even just a simple reboot) it takes quite a lot of time to be up and running again (30 seconds is quick for most laptops to reboot and open DJ software, load a track and be playing again and is a loooong time of silence on the floor). If your controller is not stand-alone mixer too, you even lose your capability of getting on the mic and explaining to the crowd what is happening and what you are doing to fix it. They’ll just stand there and look at you. Not fun hehehehe.

So, for me, always backups. I carry a spare laptop, spare external HD &  a spare mixer or controller. Speakers I don’t worry too much about. I have a Numark 100W RMS booth speaker. Not suited to rock an entire dancefloor, but in emergency cases if I lost one of my 12″s I can turn it into a side fill to my then mono system :-).The Mackies have some headroom so I;ll just turn the volume up on the remaining one some.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear…. I meant when the power cycles on the laptop, the controller will turn off then back on… so you won’t have uninterrupted use of the aux input…. I’m waiting to get me a Terminal Mix 8 and will try and remember to test how the aux input works as it’s not USB powered. Also, hoping that I can control a deck with timecode… can’t wait for more info on the TM8 and some hands on…. Keep shining folks, Moonshadow

Ah, I see. Well one of the things that might work is hooking up the controller through a POWERED USB hub. That will keep power on the controller.
