MemberMostly money… I spent a while looking up second hand cdj’s and mixers, etc. and decided I couldn’t afford it. So I looked into DJ software, downloaded the home version of VDJ and had a blast with it. Moved forward from there. I’m not completely sold on digital to be honest. If I had the money I’d probably still get a mixer and some cdjs. A midi feels unstasifying to me for some reason.

MemberYeah i get that feeling too, as an intermediate between getting a MIDI and wanting the old hands on feel i split the decks on VDJ with a soundcard and used an analogue mixer.. I sold it when i got the midi and kinda regret it now, and i’m hankering after a pair of CDJ’s
I’ll never go back to vinyl though, Wayyyy to much expense

MemberFor me it was portability. I live around 10 miles from the city nearby and that means a lot of public transportation and taxis.. So a laptop bag and a controller bag are the best solution for me.

MemberI pretty well didnt have a bloody clue what was going on in the world of djing when I started.
I was having alot of parties at my house and attending alot of parties.
There were a couple hands that used to put music on that very few people besides them wanted to hear so I started regulating the tunes being played.
I started off with a ADJ8, Traktor scratch pro, and a SCS 3 System from stanton.
I got a controller cause I thought it was the new way to do things and that I have purchased something that would have been popular for me to use. I was wrong. I also attempted to spend as little money as possible on a setup and I was also wrong about that.
I have since purchased several devices to use to DJ and if I had my time back I probably would have got a turntable setup or something, but oh well. Im on the S4 and X1 now so I’m pretty happy with that.
So it recap:
I was just researching on the internet and following my results. Which, like anything, was subject to the time I was searching!

MemberAfter a few Years of Succesful Club DJ’ing with Pioneer CDDJ’s; 2 Cassette Decks and a 2 CD Drive’s my Husband said to me that it was ‘About Time You Had A Kid’; and it wasn’t long afterwards until that happened; and so I became a Mother; (and my Husband put All my DJ Equipment in the Attic – 12 Machines in Total); but after a Couple Of Horrific Incidents and a Number Of Years Recuperating; I found myself Alone with just a Laptop;
I had Ableton Live but had no way of figuring out How I could use it to DJ; so I investigated ‘other’ DJ Software such as VDJ; Traktor; and Deckadance; these were Cool; but having been DJ’ing with up to 6 Decks when I was 15; I needed ‘More’; and so after 12 Months of Remixing I decided it was Time for me to Learn How to DJ Live with Ableton;
It took me a good 4 months in all to Understand it; but now I do;
Of Course; ‘All I Wanted’ were my Pioneer Decks back; but due to my Physical Health I had to Accept that it wasn’t Possible for me to get up into the Attic to get them;
And so; Due to Circumstance; I found myself DJ’ing Digitally; and I ‘Enjoy’ it; but Greatly Miss the Tactile Feelings of ‘Hands On Manipulation Of Audio’; maybe a DJ Controller would ‘Bring Some Of Those Feelings Back’; but for the Foreseeable Future I Could Never Afford One;July 15, 2011 at 9:47 pm #3882Rob Francis
Member@Emma – I’d be interested to hear a mix of yours where you are using lots of decks/channels to see what you get up to! Got any mixes like this on line? I heard a dubstep mix you did for your radio show on Soundcloud. I’m not that familiar with dubstep though so I couldn’t spot any wizardry that might have been going on.

MemberI originally started with some CDJ100s and a crappy 2 channel mixer – which did me well for over two years. However, all that time I was still droolling after a SSL system…. but i never got there.
I sold my decks when I left school to go travelling – a decision I stll somewhat regret. It was only when I got to uni and met a whole bunch of other people DJing, and my little brother introduced me to VDJ – did I actually get back into DJing. From there I found about the huge number of controllers on the market today, and went from there…

MemberIve always lived in a very musical household, from a young age I was playing bass in bands and having a good laugh. But getting a band together is a pain in the arse. Trying to find people that are reliable and dedicated is too much hasstle. So I lost interest in playing in a group of people. This was also when I started losing interest in rock/indie music. It wasnt fresh anymore, I needed change. Along came drum & bass to save the day.
So one day my mate calls me into his room; “check this out man” with a copy of traktor open on his machine. I had no idea djing had come this far! Also, im a proper geek, so music and tech was right up my alley. I took a not so legitimate copy home and messed about for months with a mouse, keyboard and no headphones. lol.
I told myself; “If youre still into this in 3/4 months, then buy the software and a controller”. Theres no point investing a lot of cash in a fad afterall. So, 3 months later I got traktor, a controller, a nice big subwoofer and rocked my conservatory for a few months until I moved house and had a proper place for my gear.
Then I got TT’s for a DVS, which I absolutely love, and now im seriously considering vinyl. Theres something inherantly sexy about wax, I dunno what it is. Its like an uncontrollable urge to dig.
The wierd thing is I see myself becoming more like my dad everyday. He’s a bassist, and a DJ, and loves audio gear & tech. But my dads cool, so thats ok 😉

MemberI gather your story is similar Phil, house moves and moving the vinyl?
July 18, 2011 at 8:15 am #4025Peps Lavina
ParticipantGot tired of having to burn CDs almost everyday. Also, buying vinyl is way too expensive nowadays.
For me, it’s more of the portability and ease of going through all your music during a gig minus the heavy crates.
Since I use a DVS system. All I bring nowadays is my laptop, soundcard, headphones and a pair of vinyl or cds (depends on what gear the club/venue has).

ParticipantI first started with digital djing in 2004/2005 (I had vinyl DJ decks years ago but sold them), I wanted a cheap setup and and at the time I could not afford decks or CDJ’s. So I got a hercules DJ controller and used the free copy of virtual dj that came with it and later got the full copy. I used it to create my first two mixes I recorded (thanks UR31 for the good words 🙂 But I soon found using the hercules controller as toy town-ish and not having the cue-mix so was reliant on my speakers, which is not good if you only get time late in the day.
I left it all for a while, then last year being more flush I got the kit I have today. I didn’t want o go for the CDJ route as I dont see the point of it, for me its more dead than vinyl, which has some purpose or point. MP3/controllers is the future, but I like vinyl too, so DVS was best of both worlds and Traktor seemed best for me as well as being able to use it for DVS it has great midi programmability so I wont be tied to specific hardware like with searato.
However, I needed to move forwards too so I needed a controller, at the time most controllers just seemed to model the 2 decks and a mixer approach, like the VCI 100, which to me was not forward thinking enough, its not a paradigm shift, I already had got decks/mixer and DVS, so why duplicate that? I wanted to add something new to set-up that looks forwards rather than backwards. I admit the hawtin setup video was very inspirational in this regard. So I got myself the 1d controller, as the time it was the only thing to offer control of four decks at the same time. Its great to sit along with traktor scratch DVS, as i can use my four deck mapping to work it for effects and looping along with basic transport control with the external mixer handling eq. Or when I need to play out I can use my 2 deck mapping and go simple with eq/mixer/transport controls all on it.
However I was not content for just DJ’ing, everyman and his dog is a DJ these days, though with four decks was an improvement there needed to be more I thought. To really separate myself out I thought the concept of DJ’ing needs to move forwards too – what is going to be the real paradigm shift? For me this was live remixing and productions, Sasha had proven it was possible with the technology now, though not having 10,00 to spend on my own Maven, I got the Akai APC 40 and a copy of Ableton and now use it to freestyle and jam around – its an awesome tool.
I guess overall I’m a technology geek too, my only trouble now is that I have more than I can actually use at times, but I have djing technology that represent the past, present and the future.
