What excites me most about digital DJing is the whole discussion about it :p
But ok, digital DJing has two aspects as I see it.
It enables people who do not really have a clue about mixing or music to produce reasonable mixes at low cost but it also expands the possibilities for those who want more than 2-deck mixing, use of effects etc and want to take all their music with them without having to drag crates with vinyl or bags full of CD pouches to their gigs.
Personally I play both digital and CD and in my home-setup I sometimes combine those two: I have 4 Pioneer CDJ 500S’s and a laptop running Traktor Pro 2.6 with a Vestax TR-1 as controller.
It all goes into my A&H Xone 464 mixer with Korg Kaosspad MK1, Alesis AirFX and Behringer Virtualizer on the AUX ports.

I cannot carry all this equipment with me all the time but I can also not get the same functionality on just my laptop.
So it is all about choices and as I can choose the best of both worlds I do not understand why people can get all exited about a certain method of DJing while excluding another.

My top ten things that excite me about Digital DJing?
    10. Access to music everywhere, music pools, retail, soundcloud mixes.
    9. Technology allowing you to do things you couldnt pull off ten years ago.
    8. Cost to start has gone down substantially.
    7. Library size is not limited by the size of your house anymore.
    6. The lines between Djing and production mixing are being blurred.
    5. You can produce a live remix on the fly during a live set; setting the stage for the DJ as an artist.
    4. Skill takes precedence over having a pair of MK’s.
    3. Genre is less of a line (can be) than when vinyl was king.
    2. It is the logical next step in the growth of DJing.
    1. It is fun to learn something new.

I’ve always had a love of music—all types—also had a fascination and curiosity about how to DJ, especially beat matching, turntablism, beat jugging, scratching and so forth…since Kurtis Blow release “The Breaks,” I wanted to become a DJ. (I know I’m dating myself, please smile I am!) Albeit, I didn’t have the money to invest or the time to pursue DJing or a career as a DJ. Most important, I didn’t have a mentor or teacher. So, with the Internet, and sites like “Digital DJ” it has made it easier for me to pursue my dream of becoming a mobile DJ. So one summer night when nothing worth watching was on the TV, I decided to Google “how to DJ?” and stumbled across “Virtual DJ,” I was in DJ heaven!

I love learning and unearthing new things. Thus, I enrolled in a community college (currently in first year) to pursue an AAAS degree in Electronic MIDI Music Production because there wasn’t or aren’t any schools awarding degrees in DJing. I have to say I’m glad I stumbled across “Virtual DJ” because I’m learning how to DJ (digital DJ) and how to use MIDI to produce electronic music. I’m also happy that I don’t have to invest a lot on money to learn how to DJ now.

Stumbling upon “Virtual DJ” was perfect timing for me because I now have the time and dedication it takes to become a mobile DJ. Furthermore, I’m happy to be back in college learning about music and music theory because I’ve and am learning about musical from the ground up and now have a newfound respect and appreciation for what goes into making a record and a “Hit Record” at that.

In “Coda,” summary, I’ve found my fountain of youth—digital DJing—thus I’m enjoying my rebirth and “Moving in the Key(s) of Life” as I continue my musical sojourn of learning how to DJ and Electronic MIDI Music Production; thus, I looking forward to what Digital DJ has to offer.

For me, it is not having aching arms at the end of the night after carrying the boxes back to the car. 🙂

SO many things better in digital though, track selection, convenience , ability to manipulate tracks on the fly. with looping effects etc to make the mix more of you than the original artist. Having all the track info in front of you instead of having to keep it in your head. Although having the important bits is the sign of a good DJ.

A reporter interviewed Albert Einstein. At the end of the interview, the reporter asked if he could have Einstein’s phone number so he could call if he had further questions.

“Certainly” replied Einstein. He picked up the phone directory and looked up his phone number, then wrote it on a slip of paper and handed it to the reporter.

Dumbfounded, the reporter said, “You are considered to be the smartest man in the world and you can’t remember your own phone number?”

Einstein replied, “Why should I memorize something when I know where to find it?”

Ease of getting material and the freebees

I will admit, there are some brilliant tracks I will buy when i get the money, but recently, I had a moment where i decided to be good. I binned my whole collection of 80% pirated songs and started fresh. And you would not believe the amount of tracks I have gotten for free just by looking

I have a respectable music collection of over 500 songs… And none of them were illegally gotten (The remakes of unreleased songs are questionable, but generally, nothing pirated blatently). And it’s actually surprisingly easy to get these songs. Just check out Youtube suggestions when listening to songs, follow a load of people on Soundcloud, check out what they have liked, get suggestions from mates.

I must admit, A close second though is definitely being able to play out songs nobody has heard of. Some artists are so unknown that they wouldn’t even be able to release their music on a physical copy. Digital files are awesome in this way, as anybody can compile a song!

The big downside is that I often like to listen to this music… And currently, My music library is taking up nearly 8 gigs of my 16 gig micro-SD card on my phone… And with the shows i watch on my phone as well, I am always running out of space!

I like the fact that keeping all of my music on an external hard drive and carrying it with me where ever I go. Plus, the equipment is getting more distract and we can be as creative more then ever. Also, seeing the audience react to what I am doing with my music selections always makes me feel good. It’s like having that factor of knowing what the people want next or what they want to hear.

What excites me about digital DJing? My answer is probably one of the simplest answers. That I CAN DJ now. I’ve never had tons of money and the thought of turntables (or CDJs) and a mixer just was way too far out of my budget.

now I just run with my laptop (or desktop at home) and my DDJ-SB. Just rent speakers when I need them and it’s done.

I just like being free of the record store limitations. I like that I can be at my work, doing my work, but listening to tunes off the stores. I like how I can add stuff to my cart, sleep on it, and it’s there for me in the morning…no “sorry, we’re out of stock”.

I’ve always hated the “mad Thursday rush” to the record stop, fighting through crowds to get some new/cool stuff. Worse when a really amazing tune comes out and the few copies the store has are all in the back room, being bought up by the staff.

I like how I can sit on the train with my tablet (and MixxVibes) and plan out a set. I like how I could be out of the house with my laptop and a simple midi control, and record said set.

I just like how I have less of a footprint with gear and more accessibility.
