ParticipantIm both excited and fearful, fearful of leaving my beloved vinyl behind and abandoning all of my favourite record shops and characters, there is a human face to the decline of vinyl. HOWEVER im excited about – having almost total control over my collection, especially looping and effects over my rare disco, jazz and funk collection and using those loops alongside my house and drum and bass collection. The portability of it all also means my wife will stop hassling me about lack of space for my collection.

ParticipantI have just switched from playing vinyl for 8 years to working with Traktor and a midi controller. I love that I can play much broader sets. I used to stick to a few styles when buying vinyl, because I wouldn’t be able to play tracks in other styles in my sets due to the lack of more records in that style.
I also love the fact that Traktor remembers cue points. You don’t have to find important points in tracks anymore, they are already there.

ParticipantI freakin love Digital DJing over traditional…aaaannndd here is why: (coming from Traktor, with Kontrol S4, Midi fighter Pro Beatmasher).
Quantize, 8 Cue points, Harmonic Mixing using Mixed in Key, Keylock with Keyknob(will explain), Portability, Effects, Midi Mapping
Quantizing: This is GREAT for my style of DJing…I have not really gotten into the sample decks yet so i use a 4 deck setup while im mixing…i dont always use 4 decks but i have it setup this way so that i can when i want to. All my tracks i have cue points set to the beginning of a 32 bar. I can mix mash chop and jump around to different points of the song…staying right in time with the track and on beat.
8 Cue points : I touched on this above…but really it makes it so i can make my own remixes, my own mashups…my own sound…out of 1 song…as well i am able to bring a new song in at any one of my cue points and have it sound good. All my cue points are set at the 1 beat so as long as i am counting my first track i will always be spot on when i bring my 2nd track in.
Harmonic Mixing: This isnt traktor specific…but it does create a whole new dimension to DJing…its amazing how many ppl bitch about SYNC…really like come on now…it takes a decent DJ what 5 seconds to beat match…so the sync button helps you what save 4 seconds? While i find Harmonic mixing is more of a game changer…Good DJs know this already because they have a good ear…but it takes time to find those perfect songs that create that awesome mashup…with Mixed in key…it takes you way less time to find those perfect songs that go well together.
Keylock : great for staying harmoniclly in tune with ur tracks even with a greater tempo shift +-10bpm
Keyknob: This is my own little tool i mapped to my Midifighter pro knob…same as the filter where one way will change the pitch higher and the other lower…this is great for creating my own little 4 bar loop and slowly raising the pitch but still in time to create my own little drops out of nothing while transitioning into the next song.Effects : I dont always use effects…but when i do…its tastefully done…and not chopping the crap out of a song and sounding like shit. Traktor effects sound freaking awesome. ( Less is more)

MemberHaha, yea a lot of people are starting to “go back to the old ways” because you know what, it turns out that it’s actually A LOT of hard work to utilize all of the options that digital has given us. It’ s easier to go back to playing one track into the next, instead of wisely using fx, loops, and cues in a compelling way.
Gentlemen..don’t fall for this BS…practice and find and define your own style. This is the beginning, not the end or even the middle.
My advise is to combine what you already know with all the new abilities of the software, CREATE..don’t duplicate. It’s pointless.
If you’re a mix guy, incorporate loop+fx on both tracks as a blend style. If you scratch, learn to scratch “with” FXApril 25, 2012 at 12:01 pm #19171Phil Morse

ParticipantBeing able to have my own gear with me without a truck that I know works as it should. I just hate when I go to play somewhere and the local dj says “there’s a few trick with this gear, the cue button don’t exist and that might crackle”….yadayada. Great, now I got 2 decks, which function as one should-combined and the audio crack because the house don’t worry about cleaning up the mixer.
Plus most of the stuff mentioned above, simplicity, quickness, abundance of information, workflow, lack of weak links.

MemberI have only just started and I like to DJ to be able to allow lots of people to enjoy music I like and music I do not like as that is what I feel it is about. Playing songs for others at a wedding, party, night club and at schools and colleges.

ParticipantThere’s a few of these so bear with me.
The thing that i adore about Digital DJing is that to spite the fact that both my parents are retired and i work only part time I CAN still afford to get myself that Numark Mixtrack that i’ve come to adore over the one month of having it.Plus to add to that one of the things that always had me excited about Digital DJing is that fact that i can just put my laptop into my backpack, put the controller next to it and i’m set to go.And i mean no offence to the old school DJs or disrespect to their gear with the next one,but the fact that i don’t have to do an hours worth of wiring just to get setup is a major major plus,it’s four things to connect,a memory stick into it’s place, open the program and go.
[Pardon me if i got some spelling wrong English is my 3rd language and it’s mostly self taught]

ParticipantI like how i can easily DJ Without getting the expensive equipment off hand. It really saved me some time and money just first getting the free version of Virtual DJ and then upgrading as i get better. Plus it makes me happy knowing I can mix ll my favorite songs together and manipulating the beat how i want it.

ParticipantEven though that I’m new to this still, I love the fact that I can seamlessly be able to keep the music going from one track to another. Being able to reinvent the way we think of music going from something that was totally uninteresting to something that becomes one of the biggest mix / remix of something ever! I love the idea of even tying the same song together to create something unique and knowing that it’s never been heard the same way before. Taking the lyrics of a said song and adding it to a beat of an other song to create something entirely new. I for one love beats in a song, and that’s always the one thing I remember the most instead of lyrics.
All in all, I love the idea of digital dj’n and bringing ones imagination to life via controller, turntable, laptop or cdj’s. So far it’s been a great experience and have even dj’d small parties for my friends from my Android (Cross) and was able to provide a great atmosphere. It’s almost like playing (pardon my words if it offends anyone) GOD of a party in being able to control the energy in a room via being the DJ.
