    Hi

MP3 Gain is a nice piece of software that can normalize your tracks, but it cannot fix clipping.
Instead I recommend Platinum Notes which can fix clipping and brings tracks to the same volume.

You may have also have read about high audio compression in the MP3 Gain help file, this is not to be confused with a WAV file being compressed into an MP3 file, rather its where the track is essentially made unnecessarily loud.
Just as clipping can affect the quality of the music negatively so too can this. For instance the clarity of the music such as the beat can be affected where it may not have as much punch to it as it should do.
Platinum Notes can to a certain extent reverse this type of compression, so for example the beat will sound better as a result.

The downside to this program is that its not free ($98 US Dollars) but its not overly expensive when you consider what it can do for your tunes.
The program does not overwrite your original tunes since the program creates a copy of the track in its own directory.
The best file format to use with the program are Wave files or equivalent since you will lose some data using MP3 or AAC (itunes) files. However its fine to use with MP3, most of my tracks are in MP3 and I’ve noticed the improvement in the resulting file compared to the original MP3.
There’s no way now I would use the original unedited MP3 file that’s for sure !

I agree. mp3gain in most situation will make the overall sound worse and compressed.
Platinum Notes is the way better choice.

    Hey guys,

great topic – was just looking through the forum for an article related to this and bam! found one…
did you guys hear that or do I have to normalize it for you (jk).

was wondering if you anyone has any more personal experience on software choices for normalizing mp3s?
$98 for platinum notes right now is just not that feasible (its not like my entire library has to be normalized).

maybe someone knows a another software workaround like level gaining in audacity or logic perhaps…
(like take my current 320kbps mp3, convert to wav, and edit gain or automate in logic).

any suggestions would be appreciated thanks guys.

If you look at Platinum Notes as “just a normalizer”, you’d be dead wrong. It does more. It removes clipping, expands (the opposite of the earlier mentioned compression) tracks, fixes off-key issues and does gain normalization in a more clever way than the free programs. Without getting too technical, it just doesn’t say well the track is at 98dB, the setting is for 92dB, I’ll just set a gain correction of -6dB for the entire track. There is a lot more going on than that.

I am pretty confident that if you were to run your entire collection through PN, it would find something to fix in almost all your tracks and you’d be surprised at the number of tracks that actually will have gain normalization done.

Of course it still is 98 bucks.
