    Well personally i disagree with him, I just don’t see why can’t one appreciate both old school and new school DJ’s. DJ ABC vs DJ XYZ? I guess same could be said about Hendrix vs Muse for example. Well, I love both.

    If one is using a laptop to pretend anything, well… i’m sure that one can pack 4 CDJ 2000 and also pretend. But what about the ones who are not pretending, and are in fact making something brilliant, or at least really cool, with little more than a modest laptop?

    I try to be positive about things and people, so i choose to believe that he’s commenting about cheaters using laptops to fake mixing skills, and not the technology herself. If that’s the case, then he is right I guess.

    Personally, I’m all for digital, the endless possibilities really appeal to me. If performing with just a laptop, keyboard and mouse (my kit is very poor) means that i’m not a Disc Jockey, then the truth is that i’m really not one, i will never be one, and honestly i even don’t want to be one; so i will just keep doing my thing and accept that I’m just a Data Jockey 😉

    I must confess that now and then i get a bit confused with part of the online DJ community; seems like some of us are more interested in debating dogma than in sharing and learning, and that seems just so pointless, always makes me remind the lyrics of People are People by Depeche Mode (love that tune).

    Anyway, in defense of DJ Friction, yes: use vinyl, CD’s, a digital format, whatever, but be DJing all the time. The ones (I’m sure they are just a very small part) who are faking it are not helping at all.

    How do you fake mixing skills? How do you fake any aspect of digital djing?
    We all know you still need a good skillsets, sometimes a different skillset from an analogue dj, but its a skillset all the same.
    I’m sorry but if the guy he saw had 4 decks running, them 4 tracks were all beatgridded. A skill, yeah?
    We all know how far out auto beatgrids get it, he’d have to correct them manually.
    And mixing?
    I’m just starting on Ableton and i can see how properly warped tunes can transition with very little input, where as VDJ or traktor i have to really work them eq’s and faders to get the same results- but there are still times in Ableton when an EQ needs a fine tweak here and there..

    Guys, he’s a dnb producer/dj. Its kinda to be expected to be honest.

    dnb is, to my eyes at least, the last bastion of hope for vinyl. Pretty much every dnb DJ I see still uses vinyl, also, pretty much every dnb dj I see doesnt have the foggiest what digital stuff does, let alone how to use it.

    I do think friction is a top dj & producer in his field, I’ve seen him mix, and he’s a legend. I can see how he and many other old school dnb heads can get offended by especially ableton producers who dont need to beatmatch, but as a digital dj you still need to choose the songs! Is he trying to say he’s never practiced a blend to death to nail it down? Everything is fly by the seat of your pants, pick a random vinyl and go, and he still nails it? I dont think so.

    As a counter argument you could say that the dnb Friction makes isnt real music because its made using quantised midi notes in a sterile environment in a DAW. Its not real music unless you play it live with instruments.

    Anyway, this argument has been beaten to death. But now the dnb scene is starting to wake up to the idea of digital you’re ( & especially me) about to see this being beaten to death again.

    Haha, what a chump.

    Love it that when asked why he started his own label the best he could come up with was “because everybody has their own label these days”

    9 times out of 10 the only people that care about this kind of stuff are the haters that will end up being dinosars and the noobs that feel inferior.

    First, that website needs an editor.

    And this, from the interview, gave me a good chuckle:

    I love my DJing but I’m standing there trying to mix three tunes at once, sweating my ass off, and the next guy comes along and gets the same reaction without actually doing anything. It’s quite soul-destroying.

    Awww, poor Friction. Maybe it’s because the other guy’s music is better? I don’t care how many tracks are going, and neither do most audiences. They just want to dance to good music and have some fun. The DJ-types hanging around the booth watching the turntablism/knob twisting are the exception.

    Well; as I have been informed I am allowed to use the word ‘Dick’; then I will;
    What A Dick Head !

    In the Full Article; he later goes on to say;

    Would you ever convert to the laptop?
    Wherever technology goes, if you’re going to DJ you’ve got to have the skill. I would be doing myself wrong. It’s just like cheating. I may come to a point where I do use a laptop but I’ll be DJing, ‘cause that to me is the art. It’s a skill and there are so many of my heros that have done it before me that I could never disrespect it.

    So; to use his Own Words …
    He says; “If I Do Use A Laptop I will be DJ’ing because it is an Art; it’s a Skill”
    So; Contary to his Overall View of DJ’s who Use Laptops; Somehow he will be Reinventing The Wheel; and be the Only DJ in The World who will be DJ’ing With A Laptop ‘Skillfully’; maybe he Won’t Be Using Any Software ?

    What A Dick Head !

    This argument was raging on another forum, so i pointed people towards a link for a DJ Welly scratch mix done in Ableton (Paul Welding, a massive Oldskool name from when it all kicked off in the 80’s for DJing and Production – His Orcana EP still commands stupid prices on Discogs) i’m sure Paul’s a talentless pretender ?

    This is Excellent my Friend 😎
    I am So Pleased I am not over on that other DJ Forum or I would be having a Heart Attack Defending Ableton;
    But you have Supplied a Perfect ‘Backhand’ to the man in the ‘Article’; because it is ‘Not What You Have; It Is What You Do With It’; and I Don’t think Anyone will be Disagreeing with me on that Statement 😉

    Oh; I didn’t mean anything against the Forum my Friend; it was just Cool that you supplied an Ableton Set Link (which includes the Scratching Template I also have – but haven’t Mastered yet :));
    I just find ‘Conflict’ Difficult Sometimes 🙁

    Whatever.

    In ten years we won’t see these crybabies around anymore. We’ll see millions of DJs on midi, laughing and telling those guys they live in the past and should grow up.
