ModeratorIn my humble opinion (in no way influenced by the fact that I have exactly the same setup!), you have bought a great setup. You can use it totally “old skool” CDJ style, with CDs or Engine prepared USB sticks (or connected by wifi to the Engine iPad app). You can also use it as a full digital DJ midi setup with two full size, big jog controllers and a great mixer (DVS support) that has many mappable buttons and knobs.
I play on CDJ2000s with some regularity and I can honestly say that the 2900s give them a serious run for their money (and at a way lower price).
It’s not compact or as portable as an all-in-all controller, but it’s absolutely pro-grade gear. Spend time to get to know all it’s features well and you’ll be amazed what it can bring you!
Congrats on your choice and enjoy! Drop us a note once you have played around with it for a while and how you feel then. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help you with.

ParticipantThat’s a tough question, at least for me. But I’ll give it go. Remember this just my opinion;
First of all, gear doesn’t make the DJ. You can be a awesome or terrible DJ with turntables, CD players or a controller. So keep that in my mind. passion for the music that’s the most important thing, and you can’t buy that. It also depends of what your goals and ambitions are. With the gear you bought you can make great mixes. And it also got a lot of features that are also on controllers. You still can do looping and go nuts with FX. So in that way your are not limiting yourself. And I do think it is challenging enough to get the most out of your Denon set up.The only things is; even if you paid half the money for your set up, with that money you could buy a high end controller. And yes, with that you do got more things to work with like performance pads and remix/sample decks. So if you are really starting to think in the direction of controllerism that might be something you want to look at.
I used to DJ with vinyl. Now I have a simple controller ( reloop mixage ) and my mixing is still real “traditional”. but I really like Traktor now. I can easily organise my music. I like, no love the waveforms. I love quantise. And yes, I love the possibilities that sync gives me. So I am glad I went that way. But I just saw that the sc2900 does support Traktor, so maybe you can save yourself some money. But it is really up to you. Good luck with it!

Participantsc2900s do support traktor, they came with the LE version.

ParticipantAs for the sample pads and what not, I’m not sure if I would use those. I am traditionally a trance and progressive guy, but I also do love techno. Techno is a very good genre to use sample pads and loops with, but trance, not so much haha.

ParticipantI meant to say that with a controller you can save some money 😀 But the denons do support traktor so that’s really cool I think. Gives you a lot of options with the Denons.

ParticipantOh I must have misread you, haha, you said “do support traktor”.

ParticipantThe part that was most attractive to me was that it was made to work with traktor, as well as work stand alone and it is very fail proof to the extent that if your laptop dies, you can continue to play whatever song was playing because the engine software literally loads whatever song was on your laptop into the sc2900. I think that the next series of “cd players” there will be no more “cd’s”. Just USB/SD card slots for stand alone play as a safeguard, and full intergation with traktor/serato. That is the ultimate end point in my opinion. After Pioneer is finished with this “nexus” series I think they will nix the cd play and keep it to USB/SD cards.

Participantnext time I do a little more research before I comment, ha ha. I am sorry. What Vintage said. there basically controllers those Denons. And Dave Clark helped design them. So, yeah 😀

ModeratorLOL, there is fail-over if your laptop dies , but not the way you describe. You will have to start a track from CD or load from USB to continue playing. Traktor does not load the track into the SC2900.
You might want to look at Cross (DJ) as well. I personally find it way easier to setup, especially with multiple controllers than Traktor.
If you ever feel the need to go use sample decks and such, you can always add a performance pad box.
I really fail to see what more a controller can offer than this setup, apart from the mentioned pads and compact size.
The amount of people on here that DJ on controllers that express a desire to learn CDJ style mixing too is large, and you have just bought the best of both worlds.

ParticipantI am a producer, so a live performance aspect would suit me well.

ParticipantI have been looking into the Nexus 2000 and the Denon SC-2900s. I have an s4 but want to learn cdjs as well. I will say the Denon have a lot of features. I have never met anyone with them though. I can get 2 Denon SC-2900s for $1600. That would be equal to one Nexus 2000. There are some things like ReKord buddy. Since I use traktor I can go to Recordbox easily if I go with the Nexus. Using engine I would half to do twice the work. Though if I went Will’s route and got the mixer as well It would still be $600 cheaper.

ModeratorFirst off … the SC2900s are great players, and if you factor in the price, they are awesome.
Second, the price difference here (The Netherlands) is near to three times than it is to two times the price of a CDJ2000Nexus.
If you consider communicating on the forum “meeting”, then you have now met someone who has a set of 2900s :-).
Here’s the beauty, imho:
1) You get CDJ-like performance, so it’s great for practicing that. You can use Engine prepared USB-sticks (only need some 50 tracks to do serious practice, right? Not your entire collection) if you want to practice using USB-sticks. I never do it like that, because there is no rocket-science to using USB-sticks and in my opinion it’s not something that needs to be practiced. I DO prepare RekordBox USB-sticks for when I play out on other (Pioneer) gear. Really, just using the SC2900 as Traktor, VDJ or Cross controllers will give you all the CDJ-feeling you need. And want to practice without a laptop, simple, just hook up your iPad with Engine (same 50 practice tracks). But again, why would you?
2) They are great as DJ-software controllers. Doesn’t really matter if you use them in addition to a controller or a mixer (I can vouch for the X1600 being a great mixer that you can map half the world to).
The money was a BIG reason of going down the Denon road and the fact that I am a long time Denon user (was using Denon gear way before the Pioneer marketing department woke up and took over the booth). I understand there are some slight trade-offs, but in general this works well for me.
I have my gear in a big flightcase (coffin) on wheels and just roll it on/off my car. The only bit is lifting it on and off the table that I don’t like lol. But since it’s all pre-cabled, I hook up my two speakers and my mic and laptop and I am good to go.

ParticipantVintage you said something interesting. There are a lot of people on this forum who like to DJ cdj style. Including myself. There are also quite a lot of people asking questions about cdj’s. Maybe it is a good idea do a article about this. Because I really didn’t know that you could use those Denons sc 2900with Traktor. And that they can be used as a controller. I also did not know about Engine. From what I understand it just like rekordbox. I think just like myself a lot of people are just to focused on Pioneer gear alone. I catch myself on thinking that anything other then Pioneer is just a knock off. Or that is lesser quality. But but when you really looked into it you will find out that that is just not true.
So maybe that way members can be informed about the option of using media players both for cdj style mixing and as controller. And that not only Pioneer cdj’s have HID to support traktor or other DJ software. It is just an idea
