I consider a “professional DJ” as someone who uses DJing as their main source of income.

I too, as already mentioned, prefer not to assume that “professional” means knowledge, expertise and being good at something. I have met a lot of proffesionals who were crap at their profession and a lot of amateurs who knew much more than professionals.

Therefore, for me, “professional DJ” (in fact in any human activity) is the person who has DJing as the primary source of income. As such, it does imply there is some expertise and knowledge invloved (otherwise the poor fellow would starve to death) but it’s not ALWAYS true!!! 😉

I have to agree with Softcore. I would say a professional DJ is someone who’s main income comes from their DJing.
However just because they are professional does not mean they are “good” or the “best”. I have seen many armature DJ’s who a way way way way way way better then professional DJ’s.
    Good question though!

Professional = Earns money with what he does.
Has nothing to do with knowledge or skills and many professionals have neither.

Expert = Has high skills and/or knowledge in a topic
Has nothing to do with earning money from it and many experts do not…

They have nothing in common. However rumor has it that you can be a professional and an expert at the same time. 😉
You can also be an expert at being professional of course :O and some people are professional experts in everything 😛

I would say its simply someone who is getting paid to DJ. I don’t think it necessarily even has to be your primary source of income. I would say you would have to play somewhat regularly. A once off paid set for a friends birthday doesn’t really make you a pro.
