This, as most things, will firstly boil down to how much money you’re willing to spend. Prices for PA-systems will run from a few hundred Euros (or dollars) to tens of thousands.

Secondly, you’ll need to decide if you want an active or passive system. For reference, check the bundles Thomann offers.

    Active sets: http://www.thomann.de/gb/active_pa_sets.html
    Passive sets: http://www.thomann.de/gb/passive_pa_sets.html

Regarding connectivity, there’s really not that much difference in plugging into a PA or computer speakers – sound comes out of your controller via some type of cable, which then connects to an output device – a mixer/amp or, in the case of computer speakers, directly to the speakers which have a built-in amp.

Hope this helps get you started 🙂

I’ve been researching various speaker systems and it seems like all the used ones around that are affordable are passive. This leads into my next concern is how do I pick an amp for what I need?

Back in the 80’s we built our own amps from kits.

    Have a look here: http://community.musiciansfriend.com/docs/DOC-1634

It’s a detailed – but not too technical – guide to buying PA-systems, and should answer your questions.

So it seems like the common consensus is that I need an amp with twice the wattage of the speakers. The next question is: is that the overall wattage of the amp, the single channel wattage, or the bridged wattage? Say for example I buy two JBL jrx 115 speakers http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/Product.aspx?PId=87&MId=3 what kind of overall/channel wattage would I need in an amplifier?

Like it says in the product sheet of those speakers:

Recommended amplifier power: 250W to 500W into 8ohms.

So you’ll want something that can drive 500W into both channels (so the spec should say something like 2x500W/8ohm). Here’s just an example of an amp that would do the trick: http://www.thomann.de/gb/qsc_gx_5.htm

Do have a place near you that you can rent equipment from? This might be more economical starting out and lets you adapt to the venue you’re playing.

I’ve played gigs (house parties and smaller halls) where I could use my studio monitors and I’ve also played at an outdoor event with about 2000 that I had to rent 4 cabs and 4 bass bins. Most of the time, my 2x Titan 12as and 2x sub-a15s are more than enough for any gig I do.

I haven’t really seen any places from around that I could rent from…

As for the QSC GX5 I also found good reviews around that and I found a guy on craigslist selling a couple for around 250$ a piece which looks like a great deal. I’m hoping in the end that I find an amp that can power two decent speakers (i play a lot of house and dubstep) and two speakers. I also found a guy selling 2 JBL jrx 115s for 350$ so I think that would be a good starting point, any thoughts on those two choices?

I’d stay away from the JBL speakers in my opinion. They’re not the most amazing line. JBL in general isn’t great. Good deal on the QSC amp though. If you can find some good used mackies, I’d go for it. Also yorkville is good value generally but not as high on the quality scale.
