For that kind of money you won’t get a full version of Traktor or Virtual DJ. You’ll be looking at things like the Hercules Instinct and Sennheiser HD205 headphones. The Hercules comes with a full version of its own dj software and has a sound card built in. the HD205 sound really good for their price, but don’t expect them to last ages. This should fit your budget.

The only thing to look at now, is how are you going to connect the Hercules to any speaker you might already have.

    For that budget,

I would spend slightly less on the laptop – have a look at second hand models/Refurbished stores from the manufacturer (I got mine from the Dell Outlet at half it’s list price in new condition…). Look to spend around £320 here to give you more money later on..

I would then spend about £140 on a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 (Or a Denon MC2000 or a Pioneer DDJ-SB)

Leaving £140 for software and headphones.

You can get a pair of (reviewed today!) Reloop RHP-15 headphones for around £50 – these will last and not break after a year..

And then you are onto software.

    Traktor is around £90
Serato is around $99 USD which is £65
Cross DJ is $49 USD which is £33
Virtual DJ is either $19 a month subscription (£13) or $299 for the infinite licence (£194)

Now, all of these are affordable under your budget but it is important to pick the correct software for you rather than go on price. I tried all of them out and decided on VDJ for me. So I bought it.. It was hard spending that amount of money on software but I recognized it was the best one for me.

For you though, I would count VDJ out on cost terms and then download the demo’s of the other 3 to decide which is best for you.

(Note, if you decide traktor then you should buy NI hardware to go with it rather than the controllers mentioned above).

If i get the mixtrack pro II and vdj there is a discount, one time payment of 99 usd per controller, seeing as i only need one, it seems like the way to go!

Beware though that you aren’t allowed to earn money through using VDJ with that license. The only way to get a license that lets you use it professionally is either the “Infinity” license or the “Subscription” License..
