Can’t speak from personal experience but I know some semi-pro DJ’s who swear by the moulded style plugs. Oddly enough, they got them at Specsavers which makes no sense whatsoever!

I use EarPeace HD, theres other companies offering similar to what these guys do but these are the ones i own.

love them, instead of blocking soundwaves reaching your ear to make it quieter, as you mention above, they actually block the ear and then allow sound to pass through the filter which in turn basically just turns the volume down yet you still get the clarity, thats a dumbed down version of whats happening, but hopefully shows the difference. You can get different filters for them for different volumes too, come in a handy carry case which does bulk my keys up but not too much! Strongly recommend them/this style, i dont really think you need moulded in ears… but i havnt tried 🙂 if this is your profession and will be for the next 20 years, maybe its worth the investment!

I strongly recommend ACS earplugs.. Really flat freq response and really comfy..

    Top End ($185 USD) – http://www.acscustom.com/us/index.php/hearing-protection/acs-pro-17

    Low End ($20 USD) – http://www.acscustom.com/us/index.php/hearing-protection/pacato

Of course the more expensive ones will be better, but both will be really good. I currently use a pair or ER20’s, which are cheap but do the job well.. They aren’t especially comfy after about an hour/hour and a half though so I’d get moulded ones if I were you..

I know that moulded ones are on my shopping list…

I use Elacin ER25’s. Instead of having a small hole where all the sound goes through these have pretty wide tunnels where the sound goes to the ear and a large surface area for the filter. There are lower levels of attenuation as well, but for what I do they fit best.
Consider this as well, can you actually hold a conversation wearing these? Flat attenuation curves are best for music, but not for talking to people. I find it easier to hear people with these things in than without. It’s my only set so I use them for gigs and going out.

I suggest getting optoplasts (custom moulded) plugs. Damping in the 25-30dB range should work well. While the remaining frequency curve isn’t exactly straight it gets pretty close. Don’t expect to have any long conversations with anybody though 🙂

The Elacin are optoplasts as well. Even though it damps 24dB on average I can hold normal conversations easily. They provide a rough curve for each damper on their site.

I am on 29dB damping … between that and the surrounding sound levels … not much conversation going … 😀

    That’s… A lot.
On my gigs I wouldn’t be able to hear pretty much anything and my headphones would be mad at me for days afterwards xD

There was an article posted on here a few months ago which linked to TheFader. It might be worth checking out as well.
