Actually Pioneer is the industry standard, that says nothing about how good they are, it just says many people use them and thankfully that industry standard is on the decline already.

Before you decide to buy CDJs I would recommend to watch this video:

    As for the gemini CDJs.
Yes they work decently enough, the screen is smallish and the touch function is a joke. If you strictly want to play CDs and USB sticks they are OKish. They are nowhere near the quality of some other CDJs.

If you want to save money get a good controller and laptop and be more creative than with the limitations of CDJs. Free your mind.

Denon kit is always worth a look, the 2900’s are nice. The 3900’s are awesome. Or do what Tel suggests, get a half decent controller and away you go.

I am a big Denon fan (as most here already know 🙂 . If you go the Denon route, I agree with Staz that 2900 and 3900 are great pieces of gear. The difference between isn’t just 3900 being the “better” one than the 2900. One has static platter, the other spinning platter. This makes for two totally different experiences. Also the 2900 frankly has better midi capabilities (i.e. works better with DJ software) than the 3900 which is much better at VDS-like activities.

In the early firmware, the 3900 would have hybrid mode (timecode signal built-in, so you didn’t need a timecode cd. Timecode usually gives better jogwheel performance, but you need a supported soundcard), but in the meantime firmware upgrades for 2900s brought hybrid mode to those as well.

Just my two cents on the Denon item.

great advice as usual guys, and the videos being released lately are wonderful, along with all the other DDJT content… spend a few evenings searching this site, reading, and watching DDJT videos and others on youtube and I’d bet you find your answer of what’s best for you… I would think twice before jumping on a pair of those CD players, or any for that matter…. Keep us posted! Moonshadow

I am in limbo here on the subject. I love my 2900s as controllers. The big jogs and buttons, plenty of space, longgggg pitch fader, adjustable tension on the jogwheel. The added bonus of being able to play usb-sticks (I NEVER put a strangers USB-stick in my laptop on a gig, NEVER!) or CDs that people bring (which happens a lot during weddings/business events) and as failsafes for when my laptop crashes. Switch the 2900 to CD, hit play, say something silly in the mic and people will think it part of the show 🙂 .

I wouldn’t go back to a full analogue setup though. I use my 2900s hooked up to my MC6000 so I have full 4-deck control too. If it’s a smaller event where crashing something isn’t as big of an issue, I will just take the controller.

Personally I would not go for the Geminis I have had a few of there cdjs in the past and found that they have a vast amount of pitch lag,I eventually got myself Nu mark NDX 400 they really worked well played cds,mp3 and took usb sticks it also had real good build qualit and was dirt cheap.

Honestly though I would maybe save a bit and have a look at something from Denon or pioneer as you simply cannot go wrong with these brands.

There is a lot wrong with that last sentence 😉
