    And is there a way I can practice adjusting to this on small studio monitors without being overly loud (neighbors who aren’t as supportive as I’d like them to be.)

    You need to use your EQ’s to try counteract this. Reduce the bass of the song you’re mixing in. Reduce the treble and mid, although generally not to the same extent as the low. This is just one of the many skills you must learn. Keep working on it!
    Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about your predicament of having to keep the volume low although using studio monitors is the best route as they are designed to be used close by.

    If you’re using the crossfader, it could be the way the crossfader curve is set.
