Thanks for your review. The only thing I would offer in Vestax’s defence is that they offer this as a “DIY” controller as one if its selling points, but I agree you shouldn’t have had to go through some of that stuff.

The other thing that springs to mind is a failing on our part; we always review on Mac and (hate to say it) we had no problems at all when we were reviewing the pre-production model they sent us. We will consider having a PC for doing major gear reviews on too.

So what have you done? Kept it or chosen to go with something else?

I still have it but will return it on Monday, which is one the one hand only fair because after this, you know, the feeling about the unit is not quite okay, since you cannot tell whether it will fail me (or anyone else) only at home in the recording chair, or when entertaining 300 people. On the other hand it tears me apart, because the build quality is for sure very good and the layout a true joy, even the workflow with changing between the three modes and switching between decks goes fluently. But when stability and reliability is at stake, there can be no compromises (at least in this category of pricing). You can expect, for this load of money, the device to work properly without day-long T&E what the hell could be wrong, at least with factory presets, so-to-say.
I have the feeling that Vestax overstrained themselves with the task of building the “most versatile unit”, which is a pity.
I don’t want to talk bad about the device, to be fair, it could easily be a fault at my end, but I want to sensibilize other people interested in the VCI-400 that it might be a heavy task to get it working the way you want it (maybe only with TP2?)
Just as an addition, and of course, only my opinion.

I think I will go either for the Denon MC6000, or, since I think, real four deck control would be nice, take two MC3000, or add one or two X1 to the 6000, something like that (the 3000 could use a few more buttons – thinking about sample decks).
Or take the DDJ-S1 and add something to control the sample decks, dunno. That’s what angers me the most, I thought the VCI400 to suit me the best, and it would have, if Vestax had done their homework properly (in other forums, there’s no less complaint about it… :/ ).

Any suggestions?
Would be very much appreciated!

Ha, already solved my problem – bought a setup of Denon MC 6000, two SC2000 and an Akai Lpd8.
And this is really, really nice setup (as to judge after two days). Count me in to the Denon fanboys!

Sounds very similar to complaints heard about the typhoon.

Yeah, the guy in my store called their Vestax-Dealer and the poor jerk was all the way down with apologizing and telling that they were experiencing quite a sh**storm of complaints about the VCI-400… well, honor to whom honor is due.
