I’ve definitely fantasized about it. I’ve thought about actually taking the vacation with the purpose of going to a gig.

Basically, casting a wide net to any place you’d like to hang out for a week, then seeing if you get any bites. If you get a gig about a month out or so, arrange your vacation around it and make it the focal point of your trip. Something like that?

Man, I’d love to do that a couple times a year. I go crazy if I don’t have some kind of creative work to do on a vacation.

Give it a shot. Make a demo and press kit.

You would be surprised how many clubs would book someone even for a weeknight if they know he’s not from their town (thus they can push it as a big out of town name) but they don’t have to pay travel expenses.

ALSO…if you get the spot. Utilize it. Burn 50 CDs and put your info on it (website, etc) and give them out to the crowd.

I have tried it and it worked. This summer I was off for vacation to the Dominican Republic for two weeks. My cousin owns a “bodega” in a small town of about 500. The place turns into a get together later at night for the locals, the music is always playing in the afternoons. One day joking around I asked him if I can mix a bit at least for 2 hours and he took it seriously and said yes 0_0. The next day I setup with my stuff, yes I took my Numark Mixtrack and laptop with me on vacation, and got everything ready. It took me about 20 minutes to get everybody dancing and having a good time but for the next hour and a half nobody was sitting down. After my time was up and I gave it back to the guy that usually does the music (only a laptop). As soon as I stepped down everybody wanted me back in. I told them that I was on vacation and I was suppose to be drinking with them instead of doing music. When I finished everything I couldn’t believe it. It was the best 2 hours I have done.

I was a great feeling being in another country and still be able to rock the house.

I would love to do this…. I’m trying to schedule a trip back to the Philippines and have a few friends that I know own bars, have radio shows…. and once I get the cash I am casting the net! 🙂

Heh, this is the exact thought that was on my mind recently.. I have two scheduled work sessions on the seaside and a two week gap between them so I am hitting up local bars and clubs.. sent my mixes, bio and contact to all clubs in that area I could find.

Oddly enough, I was in Fort Lauderdale gear shopping about two weeks ago and stumbled upon the mecca of coed hangouts (I think it’s called the Arts and Science district, or something) and there were a few nice local bars with signage up about regular DJs and what not and thought it wouldve been awesome to walk in and just ask 🙂 .. of course I left my work laptop at home in the event of a travel snafu but if it happened that trip wouldve been one to remember 😀

I’ll consider trying it though, dont get to travel as much as I’d like but it’s a great perspective. Thanks D-Jam
