DJ = play other peoples music
Producer = make your own music.

I play tons of mashups and if anybody asks I gladly say oh this is DJ _______ go check him out.

IMO it’s fine. I’ve done mashups that take me a week to create with all the editing, slicing, dicing, looping, etc ….it really gets down to producing & would be straight up impossible for me to do this live. I don’t think the crowd minds either, case in point Girl Talk.

I often use mash ups in my sets, i think it can spice things up, and it can make you stand out from other DJs in your local area or even in the same club.

The only thing i would say is don’t over use them, but if dropped at the right time ….. BOOM!!

I love that you mentioned 3LAU as he’s coming to my city this weekend and my DJ mentor of sorts is playing the opening set for him.

    anyways…

I have no problem using mashes, they often add an element of surprise that will catch people off guard. The only thing that I would warn against would be using too many of them because you’re almost using up two songs with your mash. If both songs are bangers, I’d rather play them separately than use two or three songs in a two minute period.

its my understanding that a lot of producers make mash ups for other DJs to play. Its good promotional tool for them. That’s why there are so many free ones to download on soundcloud and blogs etc.

So if someone asks what it is do what Vinyl Blanc said and refer them to the maker.

mashups/bootlegs live or prerecorded have been around for years so no problem with playing either imo. In the early 90’s for example, Sasha used to drop lots of accapellas over tracks, the combination of which would often then come out as a limited white label/bootleg run Degrees of Motion ‘Do You Want It Right Now’ over Gat Decor ‘Passion’ is a well known one.

Mashups are ok, megamixes are not! And mashups with 4-5 tunes are not ok, it’s like a minimix.
If you can’t play the whole track, don’t play it at all.

megamixes can be useful if you need to go the bathroom

Mashup made live are grate to make you different from other DJ’s. Last weekend I was doing a mashup of “hit the road jack” and “thunderstruck” and a guy came up asking if he could have that mix. He was supriced when I told him I need to record it then because I’m doing it live now. I usaly do a mashup live several times then when I think it perfect I finish it in Live where I have total controll of everything. Then I use thoses pre made mashups in my sets. Anyway if it was not ok to use mashups then it would not be ok to used remixes of top 40 songs in your sets they are in a way bouth remixes and not the originals.
