ParticipantI think if you get the balance right – loops can be an excellent way of ‘producing’ on the fly. It’s like “micro-dj-ing” – mixing parts of the track together to make the track, it’s like going into the microscope.
But then on the other hand – this set from Nick Hoppner uses no loops and is amazing…..

ParticipantThat mix is awesome, what genre is this? I’m completely oblivious to this amazing genre! May I add the progression through the tracks is what makes this mix very smooth!

It really is a great mix. If you watch how he mixes he keeps it ridiculously simple. From what i remember the only real eq he does much with is the bass. Most of it is the timing of the tracks so the bass gets swapped when the next track really kicks in. I think with House or Techno this is the way forward really, where song selection is the real key to creating an interesting set and progressive set.

There is lots of little sub-genres in there from what i remember, but it is mainly house music. You should check out his label Ostgut Ton as a starting point if you want research more.

This is pretty much what I do…or extend a point and drop an accapella on the tune.

Doesn’t sound like the house in the charts and normal house you hear in clubs maybe its a sub genre of house (maybe minimal house)

Nice – I didn’t know about his label – definitely will check that out!

ParticipantSometimes I’ll use a loop towards the end of a track to get a smoother transition. Other than that, I’m not a fan of looping, but it also depends on what type of music you play. It’s not used much for progressive house DJs.

ParticipantLoop roll is awesome! I rarely use it in my live sets, maybe once or twice a night, but it’s really fun and the times I have used it for creating a build in an instrumental section or adding some spice to vocals the crowd has loved it. I play a lot of Hip Hop & Reggae as well… a lot of it from well before the time that producers started having computer regulated tempos, so for some tracks, grabbing a loop towards the end of the track is the only way to mix in something more modern with a rigid tempo. Cue points help to maintain proper phrasing of tracks with different length builds/drops/breaks even if you accidentally bring the next track in late or it’s something new that you’re not as familiar with yet.
As with all the effects, less is usually best. As for the crowd noticing the loop at the end of an outgoing track, unless it’s early in the night (crowd not properly lubricated yet) or the loop has been going on forever only the other Djs in the crowd will notice…

ParticipantHow about DJ’s using the loop to run to the toilet?
I’ve noticed this at work while I’m listening to some of my favorite streaming radio stations:“Wow this song is really repetitive”
Wait!
Its a 32 bar loop.
3 minutes now!C’mon DJ, this is a broadcast, not a club. Get it together!

KeymasterThat is not good, for such purposes I have a few songs that are 6-10min in length and that is sufficient even in a large venue …

Participantmy favorite way of using loops is making an 8 bar loop sample and mixing off 2 decks like normal, the 8 bar loop sample played correctly during the mixes keeps the crowd on the dance floor. (i do this when i want to keep the floor packed)

I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but this is a station that should know better! John Digweed’s show among others is on this one. Digweed isn’t pulling the loop trick, but more than once I’ve heard lesser known DJ’s trying to sneak in a loop on some deep house tracks.
