    Hi,

    I believe you can use the S4 you currently have to use DVS, you’ll just need to upgrade your software to Scratch Pro which I think costs 99 Euros… You would need to use Traktor control CDs in the CDJ800s and you’d be ready to go. Also you’d have the option of controlling 4 decks (I think) using the 2 deck controls on the S4 plus the two DVS inputs (somebody please correct me if I’m wrong on this). And all with less outlay than buying the S8. Of course if you want to use stems or standalone mixer capability then maybe the S8 is the way to go. If you’re more into traditional DJing then the continued use of the S4 is the cheaper option.

    To answer your question about whether the CDJ800s are too old, the answer is no. If it’s DVS you’re using, any DJ player can be used (with the timecode either on CD or USB if the player has it), even the old rackmount players of old (of course the user experience will be very different!).

    You can use the touch strip on the S8 for pitch control. I hear that it works pretty good once you get used to it. It might be a bigger learning curve to be without jogwheels though.

    Also be advised that going DVS you will lose most of the software’s features. No pads, loops, cue points, fx and such. Effectively it will control the stop/play and speed (pitch) of your track and that is about it.

    Thanks for input. I understood that I could still use the on board Traktor effects with external sources. Also surprised to hear that can’t use loops aswell.

    There is no connection between the CDJ and the software other than the tone control (Time Control) to transfer the control commands. None of the other buttons (like cue, loop and such will work). Depending on the mapping and channel chosen you might be able to assign/trigger FX and Cues/Loops from the controller, but it will be two different control surfaces, making it rather unpractical imho.

    So my previous statement was a bit too quick :-). It should have read “possible, but you’d have to switch back between CDJ (for jogwheels) and controller for everything else”.

    On a broader scale, why would you not be able to mix different genres on the S8 (apart from the total lack of serious beatgridding of anything more exotic than computer generated beats)? Is it because you have no pitch sliders? I hear from the owners of the S8 that they get used to not having jogwheels and pitchfader and end up being able to do pretty much everything they could with the S4 in that regard. Clearly scratching is not gonna happen without jogs I think 😀

    Thanks again. Just to clarify (apologies if I’m being slow but I’m new to DVS).

    You can’t use loops etc when you put your own CDs in the players but you can you use loops etc when you use the timecode CDs from Traktor to control the software ? i.e. Using timecode CDs I could scratch ?

    In theory yes. However timecode in CDJs is nowhere near as “tight” and latency free as jogwheels. Hence scratching like that is a challenge. Funny enough this works much better with timecode vinyl and I have no idea why actually it is just my personal experience with the systems.

    If you are playing CDs you cannot use any features of the controller or software, just what the CDJs have built in, which is not much. Hence we use controllers as CDs are outdated.
    If you use timecode CDs to control your decks you can use loops and effects as long as the controller commands are still accepted by traktor and mapped correctly, which in theory they should. However I have seen many funny things happen in Traktor, so I am not giving any guarantees here.

    Thanks Terry. One of the reason I think the S8 is so appealing is that you can switch to ‘analogue’ from TRaktor instantly so I can hook up CDJs and just play like I used to whilst still have 4 Traktor decks if need be.

    Of course this is a nice scenario, I am pretty much doing the same with the MCX8000 on Serato with the added bonus that I can switch Serato -> Engine -> DVS -> direct Vinyl which is pretty awesome.
