ParticipantI’m a Denon 3900 user and a guy I know works with the 3700’s. First question is, will you be wanting to use Denon’s Engine software or will it literally be a case of stick in usb and play the music as is?

ParticipantThanks! That was a good read some detailed info. It seems that the 3900 improves on the 3700 overall.

ParticipantI’ve heard good things about Engine. I have a lot of music in FLAC, which I understand is unsupported by the Denons (unfortunate). So will Engine also convert all those files to WAV/ MP3? Aside from that I don’t forsee having to use Engine much as I keep my music well organized and know where to find everything.

ModeratorI don’t use it much (usually on Mixvibes Cross), but Engine does have some nice extra’s as opposed to RekordBox. Especially the remote app is great. It’s nice to have a 10″ touchscreen to navigate through your tracks and load them straight into your players and not having to worry about single-knob track selection and such. I’d say it’s a good upgrade from using just the players, even if you have good all around collection control.
Just me 😀

ParticipantEngine won’t do any converting of files, whatever you use to convert make sure it’s 44.1khz/16 bit.
If you’re using a usb stick with 3900’s then a network cable between the two decks will let both read the one usb stick. However the display on the 3900’s (and the 37’s) is limited to showing two tracks at a time when scrolling through your collection.
As Vintage points out, if you’re using Engine then you have a couple of useful tricks. Connect the 3900’s to a wireless router and you can read the collection that’s on the usb stick with an iPad. You can also set your cue points in Engine prior to your gig.
The Denon’s are enormous fun to use, personally I would try and opt for the 3900’s if you can as apart from being superior to the 3700’s they will be new and not second hand.April 6, 2014 at 8:00 pm #2021879darwin.galap@gmail.com
ParticipantYeah, definitely think I’m going to plump for the 3900s. I really want to have the feel of vinyl and the easo of digital music libraries. One issue, which I’m not sure is a problem or not, is that Denon’s don’t seem to be standard in club setups (where Pioneer are probably installed). Is there a significant jump to be made switching form my home Denon setup to pioneers in the club. Is this people experience – that Denons can’t be found in clubs?

ParticipantThis is where that “industry standard” thing comes in. As there is no such thing as industry standard anymore we DJ bods have to consider keeping a multitude of media handy for just-in-case situations. For this reason I keep a selection of music on a usb stick that’s organised in Rekordbox, I also keep some mp3 CD’s handy. In my line of work I usually play for the whole night so I take my Denon’s with me. I’ve yet to find a club that won’t let me set up my own kit.
You won’t be disappointed with the Denon’s 🙂April 6, 2014 at 8:58 pm #2021894DJ Vintage
ModeratorOk, sore point LOL.
Effictively you will find a few Denon spots here and there, but nowhere as predominant as Pioneer. It was different in the old days, when Denon double CD-players (they more or less invented those) or 1200s for example (very popular in spots with a very tiny DJ booth) could be found all over the place.
Now, Engine-prepared music does not work on Pioneer gear, you can play the tracks, but none of the prep work is available. Pioneer uses their own program, called RekordBox. As far as I know there is no tool to translate one into the other. So, effectively if you go out to a Pioneer fitted club, you’ll have to prep your playlists in RekordBox. I have SC2900 from Denon and I can use them with Engine. I opt instead to use them with Cross by Mixvibes. If I hit a place with Pioneer midi-compatible gear I just plug those into my laptop (with USB) and I am good to go. If they have non-midi gear, I can do an export from Cross and then prepare USB sticks for use with CDJs with USB capabilities. There are still quite a few older players out there that don’t have USB nor midi and require CDs.
Unless you use a laptop with DJ software and/or USB sticks prepared with RekordBox (far from all models support RekordBox btw), you will be losing all that nice prep work, the pre-analyzed waveform, cue points and such anyway.
ALL of the Pioneer players you will find in clubs will have static platters, so I am thinking that would probably be the biggest jump, from practicing on motorized vinyl platters to static platters (have to say that my SC2900 platters are actually vinyl on top and feel like it, but that’s just me). Finally if you hit a place with actual vinyl, you’d need records or set up a DVS system, which needs an external soundcard that is certified for the software that you use. And you’d have to set that up.
Hope that helps.

ModeratorBy the way, the LINK feature on the Denons supports 4 decks :-). There is also VLink support (to play back video, it’s a Roland feature).

ParticipantThanks for the great feedback on this guys. I guess another area I’m unsure on is connecting to Traktor. To use the Denon SC3900s in hybrid mode, do I need to use Timcode media? Can I control Traktor directly using the Denons? If so, how is that experience? I have the laptop and external soundcard, so I don’t really want to invest in DVS after shelling out for the Denons.
Cheers,
Sam

ParticipantOk, for Traktor you stick the 3900 into hybrid midi mode to get the timecode signal. The Denon makes its own signal in this mode, no CD’s required.
Traktor will complain that the signal isn’t good enough although everything works, so ignore Traktor.
Phono will need to go into Traktor compatible sound card, be it a mixer or Audio DJ from NI, and then usb your Denon into your laptop for midi controller utility. The tsi mapping on the Denon webby is the one I use, works a treat. You can browse folders and tracks, use cue points, loops with adjustment on the fly and nearly everything else.
For spinning platter goodness you will need Scratch Pro 2.whatever and set the timecode signal to 2.5khz on the Denons. You can also adjust the turntable torque 🙂April 8, 2014 at 9:27 pm #2022335darwin.galap@gmail.com
ParticipantOK, I’d say that about 50% of that makes sense to me. So if I switch to Hybrid mode, I can control Traktor fully but I still need to go through a Traktor audio card or Mixer? There’s no way that the Denons can connect directly to laptop via USB and control it like a controller? I thought that was what the MIDI mapping was for.
Forgive me for my ignorance.

ParticipantYes that’s right, obviously the time code signal the Denons make need to talk to something that will translate it into something Traktor can understand.
The 3900’s will control Traktor via usb for everything that isn’t the time code signal. That has to go via the phono plugs into a sound card. I use my Denon x600 mixer as my sound card, although I could use my NI Audio 8 DJ if I wanted to.
If you were using Pioneers it would be the same, they would still send the time code signal via phono into a compatible sound card.April 8, 2014 at 10:16 pm #2022345DJ Vintage
ModeratorTraktor doesn’t support spinning platters as I understand it.
