Currently I have an SSD in my MBP that isn’t big enough to hold my entire collection. I don’t feel like taking out the optical drive and build in an extra HD.
The other thing is that if you keep two external HDs synced, when you get to a gig and something is wrong with your disk, you just stick in the other one and move on (obviously if something is wrong with your laptop, you’d take out your spare laptop, hook up the controller and external HD and move on).
So, yeah, in essence I am an advocate of the external HD situation. If I get my collection significantly reduced (work in progress) and a bigger SSD, I might have my primary collection on my SSD and keep collection 2 (for requests) on an external HD.
