I find that straight cutting really works well with dubstep. As long as you watch out for your keys, you can create really cool combinations of songs with all the clearly distinguishable drops, builds etc (maybe I’m actually more talking about Brostep, not sure if you mean DUBSTEP Dubstep ^^).

Dubstep is no different than any other music to mix, the timing of the kick is different so you have to really make sure your phrasing is on beat. Rather than working on the idea of 4 x 4 you have to look at the beats as 8 x 2

As long as you are matching the first beat to the first beat you will always be fine.

With normal music most people cut out the bass and blend in the highs and mids (normal house music style)

With dubstep its kinda the opposite…you wanna make sure that your lows are up and you slowly bring in your highs as there is often a lot of percussion and high synths in dubstep. Of course this is all song dependant

Many Dubstep tracks are club friendly, so mixing Dubstep is pretty much the same, mostly a track has an intro and an outro which you can use for mixing in and out, oh and always keep the snare-drums from both tracks matched I never go for matching the kickdrum when spinning a breakbeat type of tune, also mixing in key will keep things neat, good luck and have fun

It depends what your idea of Dubstep is. If your meaning the roots of Dub, then its all about getting that kick and snare matching and bringing track b through slowly.

If you mean the ‘new’ dubstep then it’s all about the intro. Bring the intro in slowly, I usually drop the lows down a bit until the build. Wait for the kick drum build up and switch the lows around, always seems to work for me. For a better idea of what I’m talking about, take a listen to this.

You notice the low from the track coming in take over when the drop is coming up.

Thanks for the input. I had to laugh when you asked if I was talking about Dubstep or Brostep. There’s a Brostep? LOL I think I’ll approach it like House and bring in the soft intros on one track while repeating 4-8 bars on the ending track. And I’ll just have to experiment w/ the bass vs. the snare and see what works. On a side note I came across a track by Madeon called Icarus and really love it. Check it out.

Well people who are anal about their genres, especially those “original” dubstep lovers who are scared that somebody’s gonna take their precious little scene away (no offense if somebody here falls under that category) make it pretty clear, that all that North American stuff that is often called dubstep (Skrillex, Figure, Bassnectar… what have you) is in fact “Brostep”, whereas Dubstep originally has a less “overpowering” sound if you wanna put it like that. Especially with dusbtep dubstep, it’s about low frequency wobbles (in addition to the breakbeat), as opposed to brostep where the wobbles actually tend to take place more in the midrange, and you have all those cheesy vocals and whatnot.

I don’t care, I enjoy both styles and genre titles to me are nothing worth to get into anybody’s face about ^^

Thanks for all the reccomendations provided here, will certainly come in handy for me too!

Thanks again for the help w/ this. The gig went as well as could be hoped. I was at a club that features original music bands and DJs follow. The 2 bands (actually almost all the bands that play) sound like rough early Seattle grunge B-Side Pearl Jam before it was good. The touching moment was when one band guy dedicated the next song to Hurricane Sandy survivors. I mean you could really feel the…..something. Anyway, I played for all of an hour because its pretty typical that when the bands are done they leave and so do the few people that came to see them.

I opened with the Dub/Bro step and then into Deep House. I recorded the sets and they are uploaded to Podomatic and Soundcloud if anyone is interested; https://soundcloud.com/djpossess
